Chapter One.A Chapter by Courtney.A cold winter day..
I shiver and look down the street. My head is still ringing with the voices of the policemen on my cell phone-My grandmother's been killed in a car crash. I have nowhere to go..my parents abandoned me when I was a baby. My grandmother, Rosemarie Heights, had brought me up as a mother. I never knew my grandfather..He had been killed in a car accident as well, long before I was born. Now she's dead as well...I'm orphaned.
My name is Silver. Silver Marie Heights. I'm fourteen, and I'm pretty sure my life is over. Sure, I have a giant mansion on twenty acres of field and all the money I could ever need, but when you have no love, no family, money means nothing anymore. The winter wind bites at my face and I pull my hood up, shutting my silvery grey eyes. I dig into my pocket to check how much money I have with me-forty dollars. I walk over to a small bakery and go in, hungry and needing the warmth of a building. The bakery is warm, and I look over longingly at the lit fireplace. A tall man in black is buying a bag of flour at the cash register and I pay him no mind, watching an old lady make cookies on a white counter. They look like gingerbread cookies to me. Christmas is in a few days. Glancing back over at the man, I watch him buy a large bag of sugar cookies. He pays the lady at the register and turns, watching me through what seemed like red eyes...or maybe it was just the lighting. He wore a long black trenchcoat and a top hat. It seemed a little old fashioned for the current time era, but I guess everyone had their styles. "Merry Christmas, young lady." He says to me with a light smile and hands me the bag of cookies. I must've looked awfully pitiful for him to buy me food. Startled, I glance up at him, the hood falling from my head, and auburn hair drifts over my shoulders. I manage a tiny smile and take the bag from his gloved hands.
"Thank you..merry christmas to you too, sir." © 2011 Courtney.Author's Note
