To Choose

I check hands for cigarettes,

I check hands for guns,

I check hands, for little hands,

of daughters and sons.

Of daughters and sons

their own hands will they have,

to check and to choose

of good fortune and bad.

But from hungrier hands,

there's no choice to be had!

We know it all better, and

we know it all bad, so we

strive for the hand

of this fortunate game,

until we wake up

with our hands not the same.

Love this poem.

especially gets me going.
Rhyming gets a bad rap these days, in the larger poetic culture of the English world, and for good reason, some people just do not know how to pull it off, they seem to be tone deaf. But you certainly have pulled it off well.

A very great subject you come up with. Now-a-days, it's must to look through the analogies of worldly affairs & get to shape the fortunate life rather, getting dwell to nowhere.. for nothing. Lol... I guess, it's "way better" cos.. I certainly love the way you started this poetry with the pleasure of "check-ness" .. checking for hands, for cigarettes & on & on... very intriguing. I guess, your mind has had the theme of "adults" world at the time of writing.. cos, it's true enough to say that... 2015 is way different from 70s, 80s and 90s.. of course. No doubt. So, may be, you were expressing something 'bout... "change" to be "accepted". Right?

In a way, yes, and invoking my own interpretation through my semiotic self. Our interactions with others are engaged by that, with both the negative and positive that cultivate from it. And politically, I take a bitter interpretation in which most live our their lives and prime for the next generation.
