School life

A Story by SilentTree

School life in Eritrea is a lot of tying to remember. In Eritre school life follows the 5-3-4 system. Itbeginnes when they are five years old to middel school in tree years and then if they are luckey they can get four more years in school to get a job.
Like I said school is about remembering, it isent about understanding or le ening but about remebeting it long enougf to wirte it. School in Eritrea starts very diffrent for many peiple, some starts when they are five years old, some strats when they are ten and there are not proper stuctures to make it all more sturctueited. School is toughf beacuse everyobe is tyring to be in the first place. After every test you take your results is available for everyone to see and if you are not what your parents whant ypu to be, you get hitten.
You feel pressured to try harder and harder to succes. The people who earm first place often have to study harder beacuse now they have set them selves a standerd. While it is like this in many places in the world. In Eritrea what they learn is not actual. The teachers dont get a lot of money so they dont try as hard, they write stuff o the bord and the student copy this. They ahve to remember so many things, like history it is not about understanding what happend but rememberibg when it happend.
If you dont get enoghf marks in your tests, you fall behind a years so you stay behind. If you have diffulties in school, they dont help you, ypu are on your own. While there are  very much pressure uin school, they dont have many popsebilties to reach since the jobs in Eritrea is so bad. You get so lottel money that it is hard to get enoguf for yourself.
After highschool, ypu get military training where you are forced to stay if you are bad in school. If you are good in school, you have a slighty chance of escaping the military. If you are not particulary school good, you stay in the military where evry day is a battel. You dont get to meet your parents, friend or your derest. You stay in the military they rest of your life. When you get old, you still stay in the military if you are in good condistion. If you are not, you still stay. Many stay to 70 years old, which is insaine beacuse of the work conditions.
Thats way many people tyr their bets to fall behins so many tears so that they dont reach that age to go to military. They have so many pressures to do well but at what cost?

Dear Silent Tree, your story today about school life in your country is a very sad one. Everybody has different talents. A fish cannot be expected to climb a tree! Learning is difficult, because as you so rightly say, one learns to remember and one has to remember in order to pass exam's. It is so sad to read that one gets beat in school, presumably by their teacher or parents. That is heartbreaking to read. I understand the teachers don't get good wages, but the teachers should think of their students, not of their reward for teaching them. It is absolutely inhumane to be treated as you presently are. Then, after many hard years at school you have to join the army, have no contact with your parents and live within the army until you are 70. That is not living. You have a life and I pray you will find a way to leave your country and make a good, happy, successful and healthy career for yourself and enjoy a life well lived and well spent, dear Silent Tree. You will be in my prayers... Thank you so very much for sharing this very sad, but fascinating story of your school life...

This is an excellent story of inhumanity in the school system...it seems that because teachers get low pay, they don't really care if the kids learn, the kids just memorize...no real understanding of any subject.... and if you don't do well upon graduation, you go to the army and fight.....this is so sad, but true in many African countries that are poor....it is a shame and it should be better in education....very well explained
Warmly, B
