Silent warA Story by SilentTree
How do you tell your parents that you are leaving them? It feels like taking your heart out . while our parents make many mistakes raising us
, I always try to remember that it is their first time being parents. When I was little, I would wish for my parents to be perfect, to show me good and bad signs, to be perfect but not perfect. To be there for me every time, but I realized that reality is not like that. Our parents are humans trying their best to be what their parents never were.
When they teach or scold us, they usually take their stories, experiences, and lessons from their life to teach us. Their life was not perfect; they endured great pain, sorrows, and joy. Still, they try to make us strong to take on the world, but they also want us to be children.
Kids grow up so fast. One time you are holding them in your arms and singing "Baby shark to them; the next second they are running around , screaming at other kids in the park. They grow up so fast that it feels like you lost them when they leave you. Children are destined to leave their parents; it is not easy.
There are many bad parents, but there are good parents as well. Children are observers; they detect, they replicate, and do what they have seen since birth. They don’t know anything besides what their parents teach them. While trying to grow up, they encounter the good and bad sides of this world. Every child reacts in different ways; some kids try their hardest to not be what their parents are, others fall behind, some try to win their parents over , and some just do what they are told.
When they start thinking about who they are and what they are supposed to do, they are very vulnerable. They get influenced quickly and try to find their paths. Everyone has different battles, some worse than others. Some had to battle their inner demons, some their outer. Some battles have to be won alone since they determine who they are as a person.
In Eritrea, when children leave their parents to find a better place for themselves, they feel so guilty. They feel like demons, so cruel to leave their parents struggling while they are living their "best life." Often , when they are about to leave, they don’t tell their parents because they know that their parents will object, and if their parents object, they will find it harder to flee.
They can’t tell anyone because they are leaving them with a burden. If they die while fleeing, it will be on their conscience for a long time. They should have never let them leave. There are also dangers; if the government finds out, they will investigate, and if they find that you knew, they will send you to prison.
This is their battle, so lonely and silent.
