November Promised

I’ve always retreated into autumn’s arms and dreamt of romance. Each
falling leaf that captured the sunlight took my breath away. And each
one that fell in shadow whispered of lost love. November brought you
to me and made a promise.

You showed me warmth and helped me to see colors in all their vibrancy.
When everything feels grey, you paint my mood with your poetry. I retreat
and find comfort in your arms now and in your words. You take my hand;
I breathe you in. My heart flutters.

you touch me
you wake me
immerse me
in dream

I look up from writing in my journal and find myself affected more than
expected by the distance. It has only been two days since I last saw you.
And it has been two Novembers since we touched each other’s hearts. A
chill leaves me unsettled as I look down at the pages, the letters I write
to you when you travel. Each time you return, you answer my letters in the
same journal. My hand rests on the most recent response, the one that
mentions forever.

I miss you dearly.

Another day goes by and the morning was peaceful, too still. I opened my
eyes longing to see your sleeping form, having slipped in beside me in the
middle of the night. I’d hoped to kiss you softly, quote poetry against your
lips.

Phone calls reassured me that you left to return home, early even. My heart
flutters.

Another November arrives and I quietly sit here, holding onto our journal. It is
unopened and I rest my hand on its cover. Warmth escapes from me, as do
tears. November promised…
