Silent Angels Whisper * Part III: Tridtsat minut (Thirty Minutes) - Chapter 9

A Chapter by Silent Angel

“Woo what a rush! There’s nothing like waking up at midnight to a killer standing at your door!” Tod exclaimed as we ran down alleys in New York.

“Yeah, it was very joyful. Yippee.” I responded sarcastically.

“Engel, I wanna go back to bed.” Shavi complained at my side, holding her ribcage as she ran.

“I know sweetie but we have to make sure we’re safe, okay?” I soothed, wanting to go back to bed myself.

We had been running for a total of four hours, almost five. Bright and flashing lights blurred past us, followed by cold, dark alleys that we chose over the streets filled with cars. For the first two hours that creepy blind man had been following us, but he had been long gone hours ago. We weren’t sure where he went, which is probably why we kept on running. Either way, we were as tired as hell.

“Okay, there’s an underground subway down there. We can head down there and walk along the track until we find a good place to hide out for the night. I know it sucks but unfortunately it’s all we’ve got at the moment.” I suggested

All of us slowed down and tried to look normal as we entered the fabulous world of subways. Even at four in the morning there were people everywhere, almost every single one of them was talking on the phone. I sat Tod and the girls down on a bench and told them to stay while Lune and I split up and scanned the area.

“……no, no……I told you I have no idea what kind of restaurant you’re talking about!” a lady cried into her phone when I walked past.

“Hot dogs! Get your hot dogs here!” a hot dog vendor chanted as people walked past

“Damn it! I told you, turn off the damn sink when you leave the house Richard!” another woman shouted into her phone.

So basically it was my worst nightmare; people everyone in one small, cramped space and lots of noise. I slipped back over to the bench and sat down, waiting for Lune to come back with a full report. I had seen nothing wrong, but then again it was New York City, you just never knew.

Lune came over and silently motioned for us to follow him, so I pulled Shavi on my right hip, look Zori’s hand and led the way with Tod trailing behind. After walking through the crowds we came to a less full hallway and made our way to the end. After that we took some confusing turns, twists, (and I’m pretty sure we did a 360 at one point) before we finally found an empty hallway.

“This is where we get to sleep? This really makes me want to build a bomb and blow this subway station to the ground!” Zori cried when she saw the empty chamber.

“I know sweetie, but please, no explosives.” I pleaded, eyeing her and making sure she wouldn’t actually pull out a bomb.

“This is a sucky a*s ".”  Tod began

“Shut up!” I interrupted “I know it isn’t the best but it’s all we have right now, okay everybody? Now quit your complaining and get some sleep. I don’t even know if we’ll be able to make it out of here in the morning.”

“Will you sing us a song, in Russian?” Zori asked, motioning to Shavi and herself.

“Sure honey.” I said

I pulled them into a corner and let them curl up on either side of me. After a second I began, even though it felt stupid to be singing to a nine and four year old in basically a crack in a subway station.

“How did we ever get this far?

You touch my hand and start the car.

And for the first time in my life,

I’m crying

Are we in space?

Do we belong?

Someplace where no one calls us wrong

And like the stars we burn away

The miles,

I sang, knowing what the question afterward would be

“What does the Russian part mean?” Shavi asked

“Maybe I’ll tell you someday, but it’s not for little ears. Sleep well.” I whispered

I stood up and walked out of the ‘crack’ in the wall and stood outside, watching, and making sure no one would find us.

“So, what exactly did the Russian part say that was not for little ears?” Lune asked as he stepped out.

“Okay, I’ll tell you,” I sighed

“I’m a star, you’re a star, someone was told to extinguish us, someone handed in and obtained the addresses of our meetings, from eyes on the ceiling, and no one will find. Voices will crack and ice will break and I’m lost without the key, and my bed is my grave, and it’s time to switch off, and they’ve almost caught us. Smile, release, cover the mirrors, rip apart and say ‘I’m dead, you’re dead.’ Close yourself off and lie there alone, become no one, and my hands won’t shake. Everything’s okay with my hand, it’s time to avenge, as easy as two times two. I got in the taxi so f’ it, and don’t ever ask, I could never forgive you. I’ve found my revenge, all the ‘powder’ I can find, multiplied by six. Don’t call, don’t call, I’m tired, I’m tired, I am so f’ing tired of you.”

“Wow, that’s a….cheerful song.” Lune responded

“Ha, yeah, I have no idea why I chose to sing it to the girls, but there’s something about it, something really familiar about it. It is a real song, but there’s more to the memory than that….I don’t know.” I replied, looking away and down the hall.

“Huh, another mystery. Don’t worry, someday you’ll remember everything.” Lune soothed

“Do you promise?” I asked, now looking back at him

“I cross my heart.” Lune whispered.

That’s when a glass-shattering scream broke the moment.
