Patriots

Patriots

A Poem by Sidewalk

do you remember

when we were

patriots for the night?

sodas laced

with Daniel’s rye

and looking for a fight

this is our hometown

to pay is an offense

so me and Joel

crept through a hole

in the chain link fence

and I saw you first

in a summer swinger dress

beautiful for you

seems so effortless

indie girls in cowboy boots

are riding ferris wheels

while drunken losers

down below

are dreaming, clicking heels

so I drank to my own courage

and grabbed you by the hand

said my name  was Johnny Cash

and I’m gonna be your man

Baby I’m gonna be your man

did you feel the summer chills

as we slow danced

to the anthem

ambers fell upon our head

as explosions in the sky

reflected in your eyes

I like this poem. You describe a good night. I like the use of Johnny Cash and drinking for courage. I have done that a few times. A outstanding poem. Thank you.
