Fear Becomes Us

Fear Becomes Us

A Poem by Siddartha Beth Pierce

Fear

is an instinct

built into our

delicate, complicated

systems

to warn us of danger,

harm, ill will

that may come

our way.

It has been

propogated often

as a tool to control

the masses

with widespread

panic, fanatical

stories of what

may become of us

if we do not follow

the rules.

It can be a savior

or a beast-

fear may save us

or damn us-

depending upon

how we let it

lead us

not into

temptation

but allow it

to do its duty

of security.

When we walk

the tracks of

life and

the train grows

nigh-

fear will tell us

to bow

gracefully

aside-

out of the way

while those

that have

dishonored its

usefulness, its

necessity for

survival

may play chicken

once again

with our own

souls in the

balance.

Fear is to be

revered

not

feared, it

shall bring

you safely

home.

Fear is sharper than than any sword and it is swift to cut to our senses of reason. Brilliantly expressed words of truth. I am enjoying your style; I think it is very fresh. Your work contains nuggets of wisdom that deserve to be shared.

This:

"It has been
propogated often
as a tool to control
the masses
with widespread
panic, fanatical
stories of what
may become of us
if we do not follow
the rules."

will present itself to be the end of liberty as we know it.
Superlative writing.

A very wise and truthful look at fear, but you make it so your own............wonderful, thoughful
and expressive, leaving me to ponder many lines written by you..............

It can be a savior

or a beast-

fear may save us

or damn us-

depending upon

how we let it

lead us

not into

temptation

but allow it

to do its duty

of security.

Indeed fear holds many shapes, even in happiness we fear something or someone
could snatch that happiness away............we learn to control fear, but does it ever
leave us?
I loved this piece.

Captivating and intriuging and yet oh so short. you were able to convey your message very strongly without using a whole bunch of pointless rambling and what not. Fear is an incredible emotion that is, as you said, very two sided. very well written, and my apologies for not being so. . in depth. . .today, its just one of those days, I guess :)

Sometimes when my fears are too much. I'll remember the reverence, the saving grace of it. What a great write!

smart poetry here - strong statements - fear can either protect us or bury us. Well stated words.

Stunning..... your words are so very captivating... I had to chase them all the way to the end of the page!! It's so true... fear can be many things to many people.... it can be misused or honored, keep us safe or keep us scared. Love this piece.... it's very good!!

Cool treatment! Fear's an intriguing double-edge; the sensible survival instinct, or the manipulated neurosis.

I'm reminded of a couple of referents re fear, from rad guru Adi Da. On the one hand, he refers to the animal intelligence of the cat, who is wide-awake in flight or fight mode at a threat, but just as quickly settles back into that droll insouciant variation on Buddhic calm. Then vis-a-vis the "threat" to the ego from a direct shot of divinity, he says: "Fear is when love stops short of Infinity."

If ya want to be Awake, bring on the edges, I say. Hence, ironic ethical dimensions in "transgressive" modes, at times. Like, does one want "Valium" harmony (with or without the pill), or does one want to be completely Alive, in which case equanimity, harmony, is hardly the goal, but merely the practical aspect of sustaining the intensity of more Life, physical, emotional, instinctual, spiritual, creative, sexual -- the whole
psycho-spiritual instrument, nominally known as "self."

So, the double-edge of fear is an extremely interesting focus of enquiry. Thanks for the thought-provoking poem!

;~) Safely home... where we long to be, after being, away. Tucked once again within our "safe haven" in order to replenish our souls so we may stand up, strong again. Oh, this is a fine write, for it reminds us of ourselves and what we need to, want to and desire to do.
Thanks for sharing!!
