The Consumer's Custom

The Consumer's Custom

A Poem by Siddartha Beth Pierce

The pipe dreams

a smoky haze

above his glassed gaze

dulled by the nicotine

he has placed within

his divet.

Releasing the tension

of his addiction

and his day's toil-

the smoker can't give

up the hope that his

lungs and throat

will survive

his need for tobacco

until he can quit-

try again to escape

the habit

break himself of the

need for that crop

that grew so abundantly

across the US countryside.

Captured souls

enslaved

to manage the cutting

of the horticulturalist

needs desired by

so many.

as an innocent teenager i had smoked to impress others. then a girl let me know she has difficulties to breath amid tobacco smoke. so i gave up. i have not pondered over it. now i am. i think i must spread the knowledge that quitting is that easy.only love is the addiction you have to replace it with! thank you for this wonderful piece. i am enslaved by your writing. what can be done?
