Nature Camp

Nature Camp

A Poem by Siddartha Beth Pierce

Lads et

lasses

Herpetology

Orienteering

Astronomy

Wildlife Art

Copperhead swallows chipmunk

Rivers paint rock

Botony and bees

Timber rattlers

snagged

A nasty skid in the trail

from the Mess Tent

bug juice

and Mr. Coalbody's pee train hauled it away.

Infirmiry bound

gravel scraped

out of palms upheld

scalpeled

Stupid boy must have loved her

a bit to have tripped her

like that

in this junior high summer

of advanced study.

College counselors at work

pokering one another

at night with the moonshine

of the evening breeze.

The canteen held

beautiful treats

for sweaty silouhettes

in the shade

Orange Crush Nehi

A worn moss green T-Shirt

and thoughts of homesickness

when those two girls

abour her in the bunkbeds

snickered and snied

and said they would

chop off her hair

in the middle of the night

because one of them had a

thing for some jockey

who liked her instead.

Nice. sucks the summer camp was a bad experience though. I liked how it listed off all those little things that make or memories what they are.
