I Must Hold You

I Must Hold You

A Poem by John F

I must hold you. But I fear such love
Is impossible. There is a drift
Across our hearts, a bad wind
Disturbing our peace.

We fell into this by accident,
Yes, there were signs,
But there are also forces
Working against us.

A sound delay ruins
Our breathing, every delayed reaction
Causes a light to flicker.
Every test is an audition
For a sad movie I wouldn’t want
To watch without you.

Half-heartedly,
We ask the stars above
For a real chance,
For the dark fire to walk away
From my heart, and the bitter water
To dry away from your skin.

For the god of distances
To crush this vast expanse
Between us,
Like a garlic clove beneath
The heel of his mighty hand.

What a great last stanza.
I prefer to watch sad movies alone.
