It Feels Cold Here Tonight

It Feels Cold Here Tonight

A Poem by John F

It feels cold here tonight,
And I’m alone again.

So I’ll cover up with
A second blanket,
And keep the window
closed.

I hope you’re sleeping now,
Wherever you are.

When I awake
I’ll open the window
To let in the hisses
and sputters
Of early spring.

I’ll drink a glass of water,
Like I always do,
And think of you.

It will be early afternoon
Where you are,
So I’ll have overslept
To meet you again.

I’m afraid I’ll have no
Dreams to disclose,
But I will search for words
In the everyday,
To submit for
Your consideration.

There are opening scenes
And poetry everywhere,
You just have to know
Where to look.

I see reflections of you
Cracking vibrantly
In the windows
Of the morning train.

And bad omens cling
Breathlessly to a tired musician
Standing in a sorry doorway,
Smoking from a borrowed cigarette.

Too sincere to compromise.
Too profoundly melancholic
To give it up.
