Remains of the Day

Remains of the Day

A Poem by John F

Tonight we are the dance
at the end of the universe.

We play, we overflow,
We spill over.

We can’t help it,
It’s in our hydrous natures.

Yet that sad vale of tears
eclipses and darkens both of us.

Sometimes it feels like we are
Living in each other’s dream.

Sometimes the whole dream is you,
And I am the slow waves you have
Summoned to pass through you.

Other times I am the dream,
And you are the sacred blue
I have stirred into another starry night.

Tonight there are no stars
Or waves moving,
Just a voice singing down
Through the ceiling.

And a ballad about a soldier
Leaving his lover sleeping
In the early hours.

There comes a moment
When the singer declares
His heart is breaking.

And it’s almost unbearable.

His voice moves between
The tension of the sentiment
And the huge resistance
Overcome to utter it.

I love how the poem explores the connection between two people, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The language is beautiful..I especially liked "I am the slow waves you have summoned to pass through you".
