There Is No Ocean

There Is No Ocean

A Poem by John F

We can’t meet together,
Nor can we meet apart.

But still this silence
Cannot salve
Wounds washed out by
Measures of penitence.

We were like a collision of worlds
That don’t belong together,
Magnificently stark.

But now this distance needs a metaphor.

There is no ocean between us,
But every inch of distance
Is as immense as an ocean.

We are unalterably
Separated and held apart
by these inches.

They invite us to sink with them
But they can’t be passed through.

In silent prayer
I have asked for the water
To sustain us
And guide our secrets
Back to light.

But that vast emotional spiritual abyss
Would only separate us further,
Now that we know,
There is no other name for love.

No would-be sighing
That would dry up
The immensity of oceans
Wiped away in every tear.
