End of the Affair

End of the Affair

A Poem by John Fitzgerald

In Antalya, there is nothing to be had without
asking, and so I will ask for nothing more.

And there will be no more drowning.

I have been underexposed
To such things,
And so the light was too bright
To guide me back to the surface.

In my mind, she is always lit
From behind the sun.

But I can’t say I wasn’t aware of her distress.

Too many poems were punctured
With contractions of the voice,
Like water was filling up her lungs.

We both know love
Should not be commemorated
By such green and claustrophobic imagery.

And so I will swim again into shallow waters
Without her,
And want for her to move and breath
Towards happiness without me.

I had someone I might have written this poem to...minus the last line...
I had no reason to feel that part. the metaphor is terrific in this piece.
So well carried through the poem.
