                                 CHAPTER - 1

‘Please wait outside’, said the nurse. She then opened the door of the maternity ward and the ward boys pushed the stretcher inside. He then had to unwillingly leave his wife’s hand. The doctor rushed towards the maternity ward once she was taken in.

‘Doctor!’ he panted. The doctor was about to shut the door when he felt the pressure on the door from the other side. He peeped out, held the man’s hand and said, ‘We’ll try our best Mr. Goel, have faith in God’. Wiping the sweat on his forehead he silently sat down on the couch near the ward and rested his head on his hands folded together. Just then his phone rang. He attended the call and said, ‘Cancel all the appointments and meetings. Right now I have something more important than business.’  His phone rang again. ‘Don’t you understand what I say? Cancel everything. Just do what you are told.’ said the man crushing his teeth and then hung up. He leaned back and started staring at the ceiling fan, thinking of something or may be praying.

Don’t know for how long he had been gazing. His eyelids were becoming heavy when his body jolted at the sound of unlocking of the door. At once he was on his feet. He stood right in front of the doctor, looked straight into his eyes and asked, ‘My wife, how is she? And my child?’. The doctor looked at him for a moment and took a heavy breath, but didn’t utter a word. ‘What’s the matter? Say something. Is everything ok?’ the man almost screamed holding the doctor by his shoulder.

‘Yes, they are fine. Both, the mother and the child are out of danger, but…’

‘But what doctor? Come on, spit it out,’ he said in a totally confused state.

‘Well, Mr. Goel I need to show you something. Please follow me.’

The doctor took him inside the room where his wife was lying on the bed, still

unconscious due to anesthesia. Beside her in the cradle he saw two little fists moving slowly and a pair of tiny feet paddling gently in the air. His eyes gleamed with joy and he stretched out his hands to touch his little one. He was about to reach out when the doctor took the baby in his arms and said, ‘It’s difficult, but you have to accept it,’ and removed the cloth wrapped around the  baby’s abdomen.

The man gasped, ‘This can’t be. No, it’s impossible’.

‘This is the truth Mr. Goel. Your child is neither a girl nor a boy,’ said the doctor.

I do see this part needing a change for clarity:

‘Don’t you understand what I say? Cancel everything.
‘Don’t you understand what I'm saying? Cancel everything.

As for the ending clause...seems a mix verdict...where this goes is anyone's guess...there is a condition that a baby can be born with Ambiguous genitalia (also known as atypical genitalia)...but where the story lies...gives the reader that much to look forward with the excerpt you present here...in the way this ends...and leaves much to ponder...
