I looked into those eyes

I looked into those eyes 

As a part of her dies; 

I didn't ask 

She didn't answer. 

Who is this lady 

I wondered... 

On the outside she is lovely 

From the inside a catastrophe// 

 

She is bred from the same blood 

Been in the same place; 

Yet there is something she hid 

And never let it show on her face. 

She didn't lie, 

But never told the truth 

If you demanded for it, she would repel 

If you didn't, she would never tell.

 

I stood there confused, 

Staring into those eyes 

As they held all the mysteries, 

Till she died.

There are people we will never understand. I've often thought about people I used to know that held them in sadness for whatever reason I'll never know. Mysteries indeed. This poem brings back memories and made me think.

There are always things that one carries to the grave with them.
I looked into my wife's eyes as she lay dying from cancer; unblinking and open only as slits for the last two days of her life. I wondered if she could see me, and I wondered what lay buried deep behind them, unknown to me.
