This time I mean goodbye

This time I mean goodbye

A Poem by SJ Roebling
"

When a relationship is over and you stay in it for all the wrong reasons

"

Need, left from infatuation,

Hard mind-set and sheer frustration,

Abhorring the abomination,

My life is stuck on pause.

Tolerance, left years ago,

Replaced with a detached ego,

Aloof to you and justly so,

This time I pick the fight.

My worth, I will not so defend,

You know me better than to bend,

I’m sure you’d rather I pretend,

That everything is fine.

But hey, it doesn’t work that way,

Rules were made to disobey,

I’m not a child to lead astray,

Preach to someone else.

I’ve kept my views unto myself,

The unread book stored on your shelf,

Though it’s not me, who needs the help,

Takes two to start a fight.

On down the road you may look back,

In hindsight off the beaten track,

Regardless of the cause you lack,

No doubt you'll shake your head.

But it was time for me to leave,

I never meant so to deceive,

In truth we needed a reprieve,

This time I mean goodbye.

All I can say is wow. This is so powerful and I deeply and truly identify. This poem speaks directly of a situation I myself have been in, and I don't think I could have put down the thoughts and feelings as well as you have here. Not only is the subject and wording beautiful, this poem flows and is very pleasurable to read. Thank you so very, very much for sharing this!

I have immensely enjoyed your poem. You are a strong creative poet and the poetic elements used, such as rhyming, really holds my interest. I think your expressions are powerful and the reader can relate to your words of wanting to set yourself free from a relationship that was suffering. Whether we have struggled with unhealthy relationships in our family life, friendships or romantic bonds, we have all been guilty of staying in relationships for the wrong reasons. Being together should never be confused with the possession of another person. The end of your poem shed some light that it is possible for those who feel “stuck” or “pressured,” to finally be able to break free and say goodbye forever.

As I read the poem I began to visualize an amazing story. We put put up with things because we are afraid to change, yet sometimes change is what is best for us. When ways of a former send us to the brink of oblivion we are either swallowed and descend deeper into such darkness or we realize it is time to say goodbye and start anew. Great work! I enjoy your style S.J. Sinister; like a drug you have me hooked. I can only hope for more.

Ah, Captivating. The AAAB rhyme scheme is actually a favourite style of mine, and I like how well you've used it. Interestingly, the tone seems indifferent rather than angry, not what I was expecting.

This is a strong poem of a woman finally finding her voice. There is a sense of finality to words she never could say as strongly before. It is a very good and powerful testament to a woman taking back her sense of self. Well done, SJ!
