NanaA Poem by SJ RoeblingI wrote this poem for a dear friend of mine after he lost his beloved Nana. I was even more moved when I learned he read it aloud at her Eulogy....~Nana~ (For my Rangi, whose love goes beyond his heart and soul…) Knowing eyes behind prescription glass, In her younger days, she was quite a lass. A gentle heart, loving touch to the cheek, Very stubborn and strong, yet sometimes meek. She listens intently, to all you say, And understands, all you convey. She smiles at your silly blunders and mistakes, Yet was there for you with your first heartache. Her words are wisdom from all her years, And she passes this wisdom to those most dear. It is only her desire to see you succeed, And to make sure you have all that you need. With her hearing not so good and her being nearly blind, Still she fights the assault on her body and mind. And she won’t give up until she damn well decides, As this woman is an icon of respect and pride. She will hold you dear until her very last day, And stand tall and proud to make you think she’s okay. But as her time draws near, she knows she must let go, And she prepares in silence, trying not to let it show. Except you know her too well, and you remain by her side, Hanging on to every moment, staying with her for the ride. And when her final moment comes, you close your eyes and then you hear it, The gentle whisper of the angel’s as they take with them, her spirit. SJ Sinister/copyright/2007 (Shirley Petrandis)
