2: Second Age World Tournament And The Alternates

A Chapter by John Galloway
"

This is a more in depth description of what's going on during the storyline, with a brief introduction of the main character, Sonny, at the end.

"

Every person in the world was bound to the Second Age World Tournament—it was either that, or die.

People who didn't want to partake in the Tournament were granted immunity from others hunting them, though, taking that course of action marked death. For those who aren't hunted, it is unfeasible to hunt.

People with children under ten years of age were granted immunity and were not allowed to participate in the Tournament, though, their alternative wasn't death. They were supplied with an ample amount of food to survive and raise their child until he or she was ten. They would also be made to train their child or children in the art of combat during that time period. Then, the entire family would participate in the Tournament.

It was, generally, a battle royal situation. Every man for himself. Although, if one person sought to protect another, he would have permission to do so.

As for couples, they were usually only generated from battles between a male and a female in which both combatants were equally matched. After admitting that neither person could defeat the other, they would be given the opportunity to mate and would, from that moment on, be subject to the same rights that couples bearing a child were.

Furthermore, combatants were naturally assigned with partners for their life of fighting, in order to aid them. Their partners were not other people, but rather, weapons.

Like their hair, this weapon differed amongst every person. It was suited for what that person's natural talent was.

For example, if a person had naturally good aiming, they would be given something relating to a gun, though, in actuality, the talents and choosing of weapons were often much more complex than just that.

The weapon given to the person was given by our God.

A week after being birthed, the child would be left alone in the silvery cold night, and usually sometime around midnight, our God would visit the child, bestow the weapon and talents, and teach that child how to speak English, our universal language. He would also tell us the name of our weapon.

All that would take place in a matter of minutes.

Not much is known about our God. We called it God, and since the only time we ever meet it is when we're a week old, we cannot remember much about it. It is also unspecified why it decided to bequeath, upon us, these weapons after the Great Flood instead of before. Such is the mystery of divinity.

We call our weapons, "Alternates". Alter, for short.

Our Alternate would act as a symbiote to us, aiding us in various ways and speaking to us. The Alternate, whatever it was chosen to be, was indestructible by anything on Earth. God made it that way so we would always have a way to defend ourselves.

This story is one revolving around a boy named Sonny, and his activity in the Second Age World Tournament, with his Alter, Yuna, at his waist.

As of the present time, following this chapter, Sonny is of age to undertake in the Tournament, and so he is put through adversity in the name of humanity and for the sake of his well-being.
