Subtly fantastic. This is your best piece but it will garner less reviews and critical acclaim because these days we need a huge poem for it to be considered a masterpiece.
It's as if the butterfly is letting the catcher know how futile it all is. Whether or not he captures the butterfly as a trophy, as a statement of flight succumbing to human interest, there will be no reprieve for him, just disappointment as he is left to marvel at things he will never experience. It's strong, much stronger than the first read makes it out to be.
I see this as talking about butterflies, but in dealing with people that take the life from others so that they can have what they want. The person then ends up going through the motions instead of living. Well done.

Very insightful, my new friend, very perceptive. I appreciate it so much. :)
Sarcasm--probably proceeding from a sense of bitter disappointment, which also clearly engendered just a bit of self-pity.
Understandable, I suppose, since you either felt The Collector had always possessed all the power or--along the way--you'd inexplicably decided to cede it to him.
Nonetheless, an excellent piece of work!

You are quite perceptive as always, Frank, and I always appreciate your thoughts! Thank you!
I don't think this is your best...but it is very good...As a lad I used to go out bird nesting....Taking eggs from nests...pricking them and blowing out the life....I had NO idea.......

This is beautiful, and profoundly saddening as well. All too often I believe, we cling to the material and tangible things. We stand by a bedside of a dying loved one, clutching their hand, praying for redemtion, and memories such as these linger on in our minds. For some, such memories overwhelm all others. What I persoanlly try to do is remember them at their peak, when they were at their happiest, their most beautiful, not sit and mourn the ashes above the mantle piece.
Wonderfully done...

Thoughtful review, Dean. I really appreciate your thoughts.
Rather sad, the things we do. Roy Rogers was such a hero for boys of my generation, but when I heard that he'd had Trigger stuffed and mounted, his glow lost a lot of wattage.

Ohhhh goodness!!! Such scathing sarcasm!! There are poets and there are poets. You are one who demolishes mountains with a stroke of a pen. I have said this before and I say this again. I love your style. I love the subtle yet profound impact that you create with words. There is a proverb in my native language " there are some things that enter nimbly as a needle and leave like a mighty sword". Your poems are like that.
