The Waxing and Waning of Today's SocietyA Poem by SoapboxofagirlA friend told she would never spend more than $15 on a pair of sunglasses. She said they break too easily, said that things nowadays are not made to last. They are made to break so we can spend more money investing in something new. Something better. Over and over. Like the moon, society has begun to wax and wane. For a time, things shine big and bright, only to be replaced the following month. Constant renewal. Never ending. People have adopted this philosophy and applied it to relationships. They invest only a little, knowing it is only temporary as something new and more exciting is bound to appear soon. Divorce rates are up and marriage is losing popularity, no longer seen as holy matrimony but more like an annoying cell phone contract that doesn’t come with an upgrade. Instant Gratification is the friend who always sleeps over, invited in with open arms. We are all victim to the self- inflicted disease of ADHD, always moving, unable to focus on one thing for too long, never able to stand still. I would suggest universal Ritalin but I know that it would only be a little while until a newer better drug will appear on the market. Like two magnets, we will be drawn towards it, like the helpless wind in a storm being thrown whichever direction we are being pulled, involuntarily, perhaps against our own will and we will not be satisfied until we have it. But like Gatsby’s green light, it must be that happiness and content is unattainable. For this life we now lead is a never ending treadmill. A hamster’s wheel. We are always running, always chasing. No one told us that there is no end game. And we will keep on running. Unless we dare to learn that the moon may wax and wane, but the sun is never changing. It will always shine bright for you if you only take the time to realize it. Stop. Notice. Take time from your busy day. Go fishing and try catch a fish. Only catch one. Then go home. Be content with only that. Things can be different if we would only get off the treadmill and turn out the green light. © 2015 Soapboxofagirl |
