He Was My Friend

This poem is dedicated to someone close to me who died recently. 'He was my friend' is a quote from The Hobbit movie that Bilbo says about Thorin. It really sums what someone meant to you.

He Was My Friend

In the warmth and glow of summer,

When waves lazily lapped the shore

Beneath skies of clearest blue.

When life felt rich and blessed

With renewed friendship.

The air fresh with change,

My soul peaceful and content,

I met him.

He was not perfect

But he was kind

And my heart was truly touched.

For a short while

Life was not so lonely.

For a time

There was happiness, 

Dreams and hopes.

But sometimes the brightest smiles

Hide the cruelest pain,

And wishes on stars

Are not enough. 

The darkness descends,

And the light that shone so strong,

Alone for so long,

Is gone.

The tears, the ache

Can never be forgotten,

Nor the precious memories

Or words spoken.

The days ahead are loneliner

Without him.

But if I hold him in my heart

I can be brave.

To you, he was a stranger

But to me, 

He was an unlooked for blessing;

A heart that wanted so much

To be better, a man who tried,

A man who gave.

Yes, yes he was. 

He was my friend
