Her Eyes Were Blue Again

Her Eyes Were Blue Again

A Poem by Jason Grey
"

At the end, it's only you.

"

Cancer
Had eaten her away,
Fading bit by bit
And I knew it wouldn't be long

I visited.
Her frail body was
Light as I placed her in
A rocking chair
She rocked, and rocked,
Bundled in a blanket
And I watched,
The question ebbing at my soul.

I looked at her,
With her
Once blonde hair, now
Like dishwater
And her skin,
Sickly transparent
and her grey eyes
Drained of her vibrant color.

“Mom,”
“I said,
Is there anything
you want to say
before....
the end?”

She sat for a while,
Rocking.

I wondered
What she was thinking
And what she was going to say.
I love you?
I'm sorry?
Or merely remain silent.

But

She looked at me
With her eyes.... blue.
The way they used to be
And she said,

“No”

This is a touching and devestating poem. Cancer makes the people we love unrecognizable. This was a lovely tribute and a great poem :]
