Goblins and Their Market

Goblins and Their Market

A Poem by Jason Grey
"

Speaking to Laura from Christina Rosetti's Goblin Market

"

Dearest Laura
Innocent Laura
Traveling to the market

I ask,
Why buy?
Why buy?

Do the Lemons
And Oranges,
Melons
And Raspberries,
Apricots
And Strawberries,
And Cherries,
Oh those Cherries,
Do they call to you
On the summer morn?

Why buy?
Why buy?

Did you not see?
They wanted
More than your hair,
The hair you so gladly
Gave away.
All so they could enjoy
The Fruits of your labor
Enjoying theirs.
Not knowing Day
From Night.

Why buy?
Why buy?

Dearest Laura
Dying Laura
Withering away

Why buy?
Why buy?

The juice is
Bittersweet
For you no longer
Hear their cries

Why buy?
Why buy?

Your Seed
Will not grow
And will suffer
The same fate as Jeanie
The same fate as you
Nothing will grow

Why buy?
Why buy?

Dearest Laura
Loved Laura
Waiting for your death

Tight lipped
And syruped
She came
Only laughter
Slipping through

For you
For you

Drink from
Your sister
A scorching
Feast
Cleanse yourself
By fire through
Your veins

For you
For you

Dearest Laura
Living Laura
You've lived to see the dawn.
