Beginning

Beginning

A Poem by Shelby
"

Based a little on LOTR, a little on Narnia, and a little on life.

"

Here I stand at the beginning

Of the journey

Facing forward, looking back

Fear inside, courage lacked,

But though this quest

Was thrust onto my shoulders,

I will take my steps forth

With daring and worth

Knowing this trust all depends

On the feeble strength of my will,

But still

I won’t cower or hide

Or stem the tide

Of foolish hope for the success

Of this foolish endeavor.

So onward I go

With friends all around

Love surrounds me

Unbound

And I see my destination,

Though it rest far from me.

With each step, my back bends,

Feet weary, heart rends

But though my shoulders bow,

Still my mind holds strong

And my eyes won’t be closed,

And each day brings

A renewal of spirit,

And steps pass beneath me

Faith follows closely

The path winds ahead,

And glimpses I catch of the end,

Optimistic, though defeat will hound

Lies, foes, hate abound,

Raise your head

Jaded traveler

And hear your heart’s expectant beat;

Keep on, worn out feet.

Home waits, but still

This journey moves forward

Your load is heavy,

And only when you cast it away

Can you return to your play.

Duty bound, honor swayed,

You cannot turn back,

So keeping to your road,

You shift your heavy load.

Now far beyond friends and home

You find your burden almost more than you,

The storybook hero,

Can bear.

Deserted by companions

And pestered by rivals,

You fall to your knees and wonder;

You are sinking slowly under.

Gasping for strength,

Imprisoned by your task,

You give in.

But their faces flash before you,

Remedying your despair,

And rising again,

The story is rewritten.

Stumbling, crying,

Knowing the end,

You will never escape

You will fall, die for-

What, you don’t know,

But as long as they are at rest

Your grief will not crest.

Facing demise, but determined to win,

You see the conclusion before you, and

Casting off doubt,

Throwing away fear,

The burden at last

Will be disposed of here,

So tossing it off,

You let your life slip by.

In the end of all things,

You are safe

In the knowledge of your

Accomplishment.

I lay down my head

To sleep and to dream

And finally return

To my journey’s

                                  Beginning.
