Setting You Free

Setting You Free

A Poem by Shelby
"

My silent goodbye.

"

I say goodnight

And you lift your head,

Your sleepy smile and murmured

Sweet nothings

The warmth and shared breath

Between us, perfect.

Forever will I remember

Your smile, your voice

Your smell,

A mix of expensive cologne

Incense

And cigarette smoke,

My love,

My life,

My loss.

Good morning, good night

And now goodby.

Gentle brilliance, your last embrace

And I take my leave.

I smile bravely,

Let you go, taking to the air

With sweet freedom's wings,

My bluebird,

But inside, I shatter.

This is what you need

And so, to make you happy,

I set you free.

Was this inspired by Sara Bareilles' "Bluebird"? I like it, the whole idea. Good job. I know this isn't up to my usual standard of revieews, but with you, I'm just too close to critique.

Pros: Don't you hate letting someone go? It hurts, and it hurts worse when you know you need to let them go, that there is nothing else you can do. I've been there, done that, and still struggling with it. I like how you seem to float through the poem with bittersweet happiness that seems to end in a sigh and fall of a tear at the end. Emotional and well written. If I may say so, I thought of two songs (which I would love for you to look up, maybe even message me and say if you like them or not) by The Spill Canvas. One is "Lullaby" and the other is "Secret Oath" Both very good.

Cons: None

Overall: I really like this, and I like the ending. Sometimes, we just have to accept things.
