The Final Rest

The Final Rest

A Poem by TerryDarcy-Ryan akaSheerTerror

Slow is the drift that carries me
I feel serene
the feel of ordinary movement
changes all around
finally sleep is found
I follow
in hopes of a Dream
Here in the sleep of Night
there is no difference
in darkness and prey
Darkness it calls my name
a soothing song
Pick up the pace
before the dream is gone
With fury, I fly
following this Dream
the darkness will always
wait for me
Fury will win
the dream within
my reach
so swift
with the quickest reaction
my entire body
halts to the edge
of a cliff
I did not see
till my feet stopped dead
and the dream was gone
with balance and movement of arms
I wager to fall
opposite the ledge
crumbling gravel
my own body betrays me
tumbling
into a great fall
falling with nothing
to hold
graduating speed
every bit of my skin
stands on end
another surge of adrenaline
Startled to a new wake
in my bed
did I fall or jump
to reality
my eyes will not open
there held by a hand
my body
ready for a fight
is pinned down
by a man
on top of me
his steel against my throat
breathe hot and heavy
in my ear
All movement becomes
a raspy summons
"your back, good next time I strangle you I'm gonna let you die"
The raspy sound
by itself
is suffocating
He has to be a dream
Breath
I cant find my breathe
Wake
from this dream
free me
His pain rips through me
i can no longer breath
he is strangling me

Traumatic near death experience at the hands of a monster. Time can heal all the wounds. Strength can eventually liberate you from the paralyzing fear. However there is a place in your brain that doesn't heal so easily and holds on to the traumatic experience never letting go. Have you ever woke from a bad dream, normally you just shake it off. Later in the day something will trigger the memory of that dream, a sight, smell, touch, taste, or sound and the dream plays back vaguely in your head. You turn to a friend and say oh my I had the strangest dream. PTSD works the same but on a much bigger scale. I live with PTSD, the way it effects me is my sleep, I fight sleep worried my brain will replay the trauma. if I can get passed the monster in my head and find sleep, I actually dream. If I don't find sleep and a sound triggers the event back to life. I am trapped with a monster again, somewhere between memory and dream. If you still reading thank you and God Bless
