Remnants left

Remnants left

A Poem by Bob Dobbs

Left after birth……

Umbilical cord cut and stitches remain

A life spent trying to return to the womb

It was not a choice

Left after sex…..

Hot sticky stained cotton sheets

Sweaty fertility wet on the tip of my wondering tongue

Now the circle is complete

Left after love…..

Here now alone with no elaborate plans

Alone and drunk on dreams from yesterday

Disbelief of what has been

And afraid of what will be

Left after drugs…..

Stems, burnt spoons, dirty needles and crumbs of pills

Shaky morning delirium and no more space to stick a needle between the bruises

A deep black tar cough while spitting between tooth decay
