Shooting Elephants in Vermont

Whenever I hear Donald Trump make a speech I am reminded of an old story I came across many years ago.

A young man boarded a train in Vermont.  Finding an empty seat next to an old man he asked if he could sit. He hesitated for the man was carrying a large double barreled rifle.  However the old man nodded and smiled so the young man sat.

The miles passed.  The young man could not keep from staring at the gun.

“That’s a big gun.”

“Yep.”

“What’s it for?”

“For shooting Elephants.”

“Oh.” Then thinking that this was Vermont he asked; “what do you use it for?”

“For shooting elephants.”

Puzzled the young man thought for a moment.  “There are no elephants in Vermont.”

The old man smiled. “You see. It works.”

Next time you are in the jungles or savanna of Vermont; remember your elephant gun.
