Not a Road

To My American Friends

On Tuesday the American government will impose a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian products and ten per cent on petroleum. Why? Trump alleges Canadian failure to protect the border, He is tearing up the free trade agreement while stating that if Canada agrees to give up its independence, the tariffs will be dropped.

Over a hundred years ago King Albert of Belgian was told that if he allowed the German army to pass through no harm would come to Belgium. His reply was "I rule a country, not a road."

Canada is a country, not an economy. We are a nation, not a noisy one perhaps, not one used to grandstanding, but still a nation. We Canadians are a stubborn lot. We have to be to survive this climate. Loving peace, yet we have never failed to defend ourselves when it was necessary, We are your best friends but we have no wish to be your countrymen, least of all when Trump is president.

Some day when this is over, Canadians will look back with pride when we united to stand on guard for our nation. How will you feel?

Respectfully yours

From Canada
