Chapter III - Someone like you!A Chapter by khaiezere
The next day Nathan have a wonderful day, he work
enthusiastically. He chuckle most of the time and even humming.
He gives order in a polite way for the very first time. His secretary, Amy
Shevere, was perplexed by the sudden change of the attitude of her boss. Nathan
approached Amy’s desk. "Amy,
I'm expecting a call this 11 in the morning, so would you please connect it to
me as soon as you receive it?" he asked surprisingly kind. "Sure
Sir." she answered smiling but her face can't deny the shocking reaction. "Good!"
he smile back and enters his office with another paper works from the manager’s
office. "Wow?!
What’s wrong with him now?" her secretary can hardly believe what
happened. And now she heard his humming while walking back to his office. It's
been twenty minutes past eleven but the call he had expecting was not yet
receive. He calls her secretary for the third times. "Still
haven't got it?" his tone was a bit irritated. "Not
yet Sir." her voice was soft afraid that the good mood he had
earlier was gone and starts yelling like always. "Fine!
Connect it quickly when you receive it!" the voice was now casual, the
normal him and put down the phone. "Who
ever that person God please tell him to call now or else this day would turn
disaster again!" she said to her self. Nathan was rocking his chair and the same time tipping his pen while getting out of patient, waiting. "I warned her not to trick me" he murmured a bit upset. His mind has a lot of thoughts, negative thoughts making his temperature rise. "What if he was wrong? What if she will back-out, trick him? A
hundred thousand was a huge amount for someone like her. What if she already
ran away? Far away... hidden?" he sighed deeply and lean his back on
the chair. Thinking that the money doesn't matter he just wanted to see her
again. He sighed once more feeling so depress. It
was already 2 o'clock in the afternoon
and he had to skip lunch. His appetite was gone maybe because of
distress. But now he was really hungry and decided to go out to have some late
lunch, besides he also realized he need some air and hope that his thoughts
were all wrong. "Sir!"
her secretary called a bit afraid. "What?"
his aura obviously change. "I
just wanted to ask what would I tell the caller if you’re not here." "Tell
her to wait? I’ll be out for a minute." "Ok."
before she could answer he was already walking away. "Her?
It means he’s waiting for a woman's call?! I thought it was from a business
partner? How could that be possible? As far I know he hates women?" she
wondered.
*** Kimberly
was rushing out for a phone booth as she glance at her watch. "God, its
already 2:30! I hope he’s not mad.... I really wish he’s not mad....
Please don't get mad Please...." she cried while dialing the number. Kring Kring Kring...... "Conner
Marketing Enterprise, Good Afternoon! How may I help you?" the other line
speak fluently that her mouth hardly response. "Eerrrrr"
she was speechless, this is not what she expected to hear. "Yes?" "Eeeeeer...
I'm looking for... eeeeeer... Mr. Nathan Conner" she finally speaks,
shaking a bit. "Do
you have an appointment schedule?" "Hmm....
None... but he asked me to call this number..." Amy
was relief this might be the call her boss is waiting but she was wondering.
The women speaks like out of the ordinary people she used to encounter, low
class woman. She took a long pause that the other line had to speak
again. "Hello?"
Kimberly asked she’s in a hurry, she need to get back as soon as possible. "Ohh!
Yes, I’m sorry " Amy apologized. "I
really need to talk to him, can I speak with him?" her voice was now calm
trying to quickly end the call. "Mr.
Nathan Conner went out for a moment___" "What?!"
she interrupted with dismay. "Yes,
he said that when I receive these call I must tell you to wait for him..." "How
long did he left?" "About
20 minutes ago..." she answered and heard a deep sighed. "Can
you hang on for a moment? I will contact him to come over." Amy said
sensing that the caller might end the conversation. "I
was such in hurry can you please just tell him that I did call?" Kimberly
asked politely. "Sir Nathan has been expecting for your call since early this morning and he was really upset. He went out for a while to have his late lunch, so please hung on a bit, I’ll contact him." The nice, fluent voice that Kimberly just heard a moment ago is now echoed with fear. "Ok."
so she agreed tapping her foot on the floor. Amy called Nathan's cell phone
number but to her disappointment the ringing came from his office, he left it.
"Gosh!" she was alarm that the other line heard it. "Hello?" "He
left his cell phone in the office, can you pleased hang on a little bit; I will
look for him outside." "I'm
sorry.... but I really have to go, please do tell him that I did call,
Kimberly." she asked nicely. "But....
can I just get your number? He would really be upset if I told him you did call
but hang up quick!" the other line insists and warned her about his boss
unfavorable manners. "I
know..." she cried softly that gives another confusing thoughts for Amy.
"She knows, they could be in a relationship? What could she be look
like?" she thought. "So,
can you leave me your contact number?" she speaks again after another long
pause. "I
don't have any; I’m only using the phone booth." "What?"
she was a bit surprised. "Cell
phone number?" she continued. "None...."
Kimberly cried softly. "What?!
Is there someone still exist in this world without a cell phone?” she exclaim
and got snobbish following with a loud laugh. "Yah,
me, I guess..." Kimberly was a bit offended; thought of putting the phone
down and end this nonsense conversation. "I'm
sorry I thought you’re kidding me.” the other line apologized quickly. "Anyway
I had to go bye!" she put it down. "Wait!"
Amy shouted. "Hello,
hey! Are you still there?" but no one answer. Now she's terrified thinking
how on earth will she explain what happen to her boss. Few minutes past and
here he comes, Nathan stop in front of her desk wearing the usual serious face
that shocked her. "What?"
he asked, she can't open her mouth to speak. "Did she call?" he
continue but still no answer. "Hey!"
he shouted. "Are you deaf!" now he was really upset. "Yes
sir... Kimberly?" she cried softly that Nathan slam his hand on her
desk. "What!
Why didn’t you do what I told you to do!" now his angry. "She
said she was in a hurry, I asked her to leave her contact number but she said
none even a cell phone. At first, I laugh because I thought she was just
kidding me but to my surprised, it was true…” she explains as fast as she
can so that her boss can't argue. And yes he didn’t. Nathan was silent,
so she continue speaking. "It
really surprised me when she said she didn’t have cell phone and she sounds as
though she was uneducated, she___" "Shut up!" Nathan cut her with furies in his eyes of warning. Amy got scared and just bends her head. He went to his office, punched the desk before he sat on the chair and takes a deep sigh. But on the back of his mind he was relief, Kimberly didn't run away. "When would she call again?" he
thought. *** It
was already 5 o'clock and the bell rung; working hours is over. Amy went to
Nathan's office still scared and found him still doing his work. Well, he was
trying his best to finish what he had started this morning. He need to give it
back to his father tomorrow for another board meeting. "Sir,
I’ll be going now, do you want some coffee?" she asked. "No." he
answered without glancing. As Amy closed the door, Nathan took a bit of
stretching and buried his face on both hands. He stay like that for a while… Suddenly
the phone rings like the usual, costumers, clients, and business partners.
Everything he must encounter and entertain for business purpose. He took the
call since everyone was off to work. "Conner
Marketing Enterprise, Good Afternoon!" he greeted, unentertaining. "Mr.
Conner!" Kimberly exclaimed as she heard the familiar voice. "Kimberly?" Nathan was shock that he pull the phone into his reach. "Yes,
it’s me! I did call earlier... it’s a bit late, but still I did call, I didn’t
trick you..." she explained breathless. Nathan smiles when he heard her
voice. He was undeniably happy. "Hey!" she called because he
didn’t answer. "Yah,
I’m here..." for the first time he was out of words, he can say
anything he just wanted to hear her talk. "I'm
really sorry about earlier, I was really in a hurry and the woman I talk too,
she was a bit annoying that I hang up..." still explaining. "Don't
mind her..." "So,
are we going to meet up tonight?" "Why?
You already miss me?" he teased. "Of
course not! It’s about the deal, remember?" she was a bit shy. "Yah!
The deal…. where are you?" "I'm
waiting for the bus." "Exactly
where?" "Highway
56, along Sunset Drive." "Stay
there, I'll pick you in a minute." he said and hang up. "Alright." she
waited along the street while tapping her foot on the ground as her
mannerism. It took him twenty minutes travel through her location. "Wow...”
she exclaimed with amazement "Get
in!" he commands nicely. "That
was fast" she praise smiling. "As
far as I remember, you did experience how I drive. Have you forgotten the
feeling? Want to experience it again?" he asked coolly. "No...
I might mess this wonderful car of yours.
Please just drive it naturally..." she smiles. "You
seem to be in a good mood." he said seeing her smile the whole time
she speaks. "Yah,
a bit, thanks!" "Why?" "Nothing..."
and she smiles again. He didn’t speak and just watch her reflection in the
review mirror. "Mr.
Conner?" she asked glancing at him "Mr.
Conner? That's too formal" he repeats with a little laugh. "Call me
Nathan." he added. "That
would be difficult for me to say." she answered softly. He gave her a
puzzle look. "Why?" "Well...
you know, you're a bachelor, respectable man... It is not right to call you by
name, by someone like me ...a prostitute, a low ____" "Enough!"
he cut her quick. His voice raise while he remove his eyes on her and back to
the road. "I'm
sorry .... Please don't get mad, I'm just trying to put myself where should I
be..." she cried apologetically. "And
where is it? Where exactly that be?" his tone was still up. "The
distance between us is pretty obvious." "Who
cares?” "I
was once told that the rich and poor are different, levels, careers, standards,
everything was out of reach. So I must learn how to give respect to the elite,
just like you..." "Who
told you that nonsense?" "Someone
like you..." "A
costumer?" "NO!
Didn’t I tell you… the costumer I only have was you and the guys that night, don’t
you believe it!" she protested. "Well
then, forget about that nonsense! Call me anything you like." he
said ending the topic. And turned his wheel at the parking lot of the nearby
mall. "Where
are we going?" she asked. "C'mon!"
he went out the car. "Why
are we here?" she asked again. "I
had to buy something." "Why
you had to take me along?" "Don't
you like the idea of going out with me… strolling at the mall instead of
sleeping with me on my bed?" "What
do you mean?" she blushed. "Nothing."
he imitated her answer earlier; same word and action. Then he chuckle and takes
her hand on his as they walked inside the mall. Kimberly felt awkward she
was not use to this. She haven't got a boyfriend since then and this scenery
they had today make her think that it was a date, her hands begun to get cold
and moist. "What
is wrong with you? I'm just holding your hand?" he whispered moving close
to her. "I
don't know..." she answered looking tense. Nathan smiles; he caught it.
She haven't dated anyone and thought of himself really lucky. He pulled
her closer and cross his arms around her neck. "What
are you doing?" she asked nervous, trying to push him away. "Let's
go over there!" but he pulled her back tightly, ignoring her questions and
walked towards the cell phone center. Kimberly
was really uncomfortable on everything he did. She's been tongue-tied and
embarrass, thinking that all the eyes of the people around was on them. While
Nathan enjoys it, watching her this way makes him back to his teenage life.
Dating someone who had him as her first boyfriend. He laughed quietly that
caught her attention. "Stop
making fun of me." she whispered. "I
didn't.... what makes you think of that!" he answered while looking down
the cell phone rack. "Can
I take a look at this one?" he turned into the salesclerk. After
inspecting the cell phone which seems to pass his standard. "I'll take
it." he said. "Cash
or card Sir?" Nathan handed him his credit card. “Thank
you Sir." Kimberly
got rid off his arms when they went out. He was taller and stronger so he
pulled her back to his arms but she keep on fighting. Every time she
pushes him he’ll pull her back then finally locked her tight in his arms. "Let's
go there next." pulling her in the clothing area. Nathan took some shirt
and showed it to her. "What
do you think of these?" he asked. "I
don't know, I have no idea what a bachelor like you want..." "In
your opinion?" he insists. "Everything
you choose was cool and expensive..." "Stop
it! Can't you see that I enjoy this shopping thing?" "You're
the one enjoying it, not me!" He took a deep sigh and put down the shirt. "Excuse
me." raising his hand for a salesclerk’s attention. "I'll
be taking all of these and those three dresses over there." he said
handling over the clothes and pointed on the left corner where the dresses are
hanging. "With her size." then glance at her. "Ok
sir." the salesclerk answered politely. He handed his credit card again. "What
was that for?" she asked. "Just
shut your mouth, I'm already done!" he was obviously annoyed. A moment
later the salesclerk went back with the paper bags of clothes he bought. "Thank
you Sir, please come again!" Nathan
went out with out a word and with the face of seriousness as always. Kimberly
followed him a bit guilty realizing that she spoiled his good mood. He walked
straight to the parking lot and ride on his car, throwing the paper bags at the
backseat. She paused for a moment before she enters the car. Nathan starts the
engine and drive, now in his usual driving level. She had to hold onto anything
strong enough to keep her safe from bumping. She took a deep sigh before
finding her words to speak. "Look...
I didn’t mean to spoil your day..." she took a pause waiting
for him to reply but surprisingly he didn't speak. He just quietly driving with
his eyes on the road. "I'm
really sorry... it just that I'm not use to strolling the mall with___"
she continued but then he quickly interrupt. "With
someone like me! A rich bachelor respectable man! Right?" he said copying
her words earlier. "Yes..."
she agreed. "Why
are you giving so much attention on others opinion, as if they care!" "That's
not it.... its just that_____" "The
difference between us is out of reach!" he cut her again with same words
she use earlier. Kimberly's
ought to speak and explain her self but she was out of words to defend it. She
was intimidated on how Nathan replies to it, which was certainly same words she
used. "Perhaps
you're afraid that you might fall in love with me or rather me to you?" he
continued glaring at her. She remain quite and thought that how can he talk
about love. When the only reason their together is because of the hundred
thousand he got from him, in exchange of having sex whenever he wants. "A
prostitute, thought about being love? That’s crazy?!" She said to herself. It
was another long pause and Nathan suddenly speaks, breaking it…. Where
should I take you?" he asked. "What?" "Your
address... I'm taking you home!" "We’re
not going to your condo?" "It
already came from you that you spoil my good mood! I won’t enjoy it!" he
answered sarcastically. "Sorry."
she cried. "Never
mind! Now where is it?" "Just
stop the car and I'll just ride back on the bus." "Now
what! Even taking you home would be a big deal!" he shouts. "Yes, you're not suited on my plac___" "Whatever!" he shouted and stop
the car. As
Kimberly set her foot outside he drive his car fast like a Speedo and gone with
the wind. All she could do was to takes a deep sigh.
