We come Before ColumbusA Poem by WvlfThis is poem was inspired by Ivan Van Sertima's Ground Breaking Novel, "They came before Columbus", which provided strong evidence backed claims of African Presence in the America's Pre-Columbus era.
We came before Columbus,
I am certain my ancestors turn in the soil they tilled, They've made hero's of our oppressors, Superiors of their lessers, In an ocean of lies and corruption, Their waves washed our shores with white foam, Leaving but a strand of hair to trace to our roots, And an additional lock for our chains, We came before Columbus, But our roots have gone brittle, So much that we weave extensions in our heads, Just to connect us to them ....Until we split our wigs. Washed by the waves we once rode, Our waves now, reduced to silk encased hairstyles, They've made hero's of our oppressors, So much that our history begins with them.... Begins with him... In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue, Then died it red But the foam that washed our shores remained white And the oceans depths remained black as our blood, Drowned in a history written by them, The victors and Balboa's Not from Philly though just as Rocky, If I could Cremate my ancestors, I'd turn white from an ocean of ashes, Blood stains would line my veins, and my rage? would transform me into a God of War, My home is not America or Africa, My Ohm is not the breathe within, But the breathe that has been taken out, I feel breathless, As if my voice has fleeting, I question if it is still my voice once the words have left me, My words are not stone for like my history they are not written They will only live if someone receives them, So I hope you receive them
