Chapter 6
Matius continues walking through the streets of London passing more dead bodies, a trail leading to London. Dervish would pay for this Matius thought to himself. There would be no more dead bodies on his watch, No MORE... He suddenly stops on the road remembering Lemionas, the one who got him this far, wondering if he’s still alive after falling down that chasm. As he’s thinking this Matius suddenly notices that the street is becoming less visible as a fog befalls on the street, making him cautious in his footsteps.
Matiius walks deeper into the populated areas of London where many people have fallen from the demon’s attacks, the sun is starting to fall signalling the night ahead. Matius looks around the road noticing many shop windows smashed and looted for the coming end, not a single soul in sight. Hearing a scream above Matius looks to the sky seeing several a large building several of it’s windows already smashed, several winged demons quickly leave the building taking to the sky. Irritated Matius continues walking unaware eyes are watching him from the surroundings, following Matius stealthy moving through the buildings and cars. Matius turns his head slightly aware he’s being followed, watching as someone quickly moves behind a car for cover.
“Whoever you are…come out. Show yourself”, Matius demands standing still waiting for a response. After a while several people move out from their hiding positions, their clothes worn from hiding and running. One of the boys looks at Matius nervously wearing a beanie hat, his jeans well dirtied from the hiding and running. A young women also emerges from behind a car holding the hand of her young girl, nervous at Matius’s appearance. “There’s nothing to be afraid of”, Matius explains sensing their anxiety, “I’m not going to hurt anyone”.
“Try saying that to everyone here”
Matius spins around seeing a group of young men behind him approaching him, wearing weapon holders with their guns in place. Matius confused looks at the group trying to judge their intentions, “What do you mean?”, he questions. The leader with several bandaging moves his arm to the side, expressing his anger. “All this…is because of you!”, he blasts, “These demons, or whatever they are you brought them here didn’t you?!”. “No… I’m not in charge of them!”, Matius replies defensively, trying to win the argument. “Then why are they here then?”, another man blasts wearing a worn jacket, “huh?! Explain that!”. Matius then falls silent, thinking it over it. Maybe he was responsible for this, maybe if he wasn’t on earth none of this would be happening. “Do you get it now? ,the leader blasts, “these demons are after you! Why else would they be here?!”. Another one of the men steps forwards, “maybe you should have gone back where you came from, you freak!” In anger Matius takes several steps towards the group threatingly as they withdraw their guns.
“Enough!”, a voice screams out catching everyone by surprise. From hiding a women moves towards Matius and the group, one Matius knows well. “Eva you’re alright!”, Matius expresses relieved, “I’m so glad to see you!”. Eva quickly embraces Matius before looking at the group of men who watch in annoyance. “Lady I don’t understand you”, the leader states, “this is all happening because of him!.. Why are you protecting him?”. Eva releases his grip on Matius moving towards the group, “You’re not the only ones that are suffering! Do you think he’s here by choice?!”, she blasts, “He has suffered just as much as you have”. One of the men laughs to himself looking back at Eva, “Oh really?..”, the man with the worn jacket questions, “Try saying that to my family, I lost them during the attack! We lost our home thanks to those monsters!”.
“He lost his home!”, Eva blasts stunning everyone in silence, “and he has nothing to return to. He’s only here because he has no where else to go, yet you people… you hated him, hunted him and tried to kill him despite not hurting anyone. Now you people are blaming him for this but he could be everyone’s savior, if you just
had faith and belief in him!”. Everyone falls silent from Eva’s words, the group of men lowering their heads in guilt. Eva satisfied looks back to Matius, “where were you?”, she questions looking to Matius. “I’m sorry I was late…”Matius replies, “Just why are you out alone out here?. ” Eva lowers he head as everyone around them leaves the area, “I was heading into town when this happened”, Eva explains, “When it happened I went inside a shop for protection”. Matius smiles to himself, “Well it’s good you’re alright”, Matius compliments. “Come on”, Eva urges, “there’s somewhere I want to go…” Matius follows Eva as they head deeper into London.
They continue going down the street witnessing some people break into a gun shop, running outside holding shotguns full in their hands. “You can’t really blame them”, Eva remarks, “they just want to protect themselves”. Matius watches before walking further down the ruined street, walking past several abandoned cars. As he’s walking he hears the flapping of wings high above in the dark sky. He turns his attention towards the sky, watching above cautiously. Eva stands motionless turning towards Matius. “What is it?”, she questions. “Just keep quiet, Matius orders watching the sky. He looks to the sky seeing nothing but darkness, relaxed he drops his guard. Suddenly a demon flys from the sky, landing on Matius with sudden speed. With one hand free Matius grips the demon’s leg, trying to force it down it’s teeth trying to bite him. With his strength he manages to grip one of it’s frantic wings quickly gripping the demon’s scaly neck. The demon struggles in rage, Matius wrestles it to the ground fighting it. The demon starts gasping for breath, Matius holding it down firmly. Suddenly Matius hears a screech in the air, spinning around seeing a winged demon heading towards him teeth bare. Quickly Matius spots a metal pole, sticking out awquardly. Matius quickly grabs it before slamming the pole into into demon, knocking it into the brickwall heavily, pieces of brick break away. Shaken the demon slowly rising up shaking it’s head in anger It screeches at Matius in defiance. Matius raises the pole into the air once more, ready to finish the downed demon. Before Matius can a demon swoops down from the sky attacking Matus, trying to save its friend. Distracted Matius turns around, trying to hit the winged demon who blocks the pole with its claw. With brute force the demon knocks the pole out of Matius’s hand, sending it down the road. With his weapon lost both demons charge at Matius, leaping into the air.
Suddenly a shot is fired as one of the winged demons suddenly drops to the floor, startling the other demon who screams in anger. From cover several men burst out with shotguns at the ready one of them already firing a shot at the other demon. The other demon backs away defensively hissing in retaliation, angered at the interruption. Realising it’s outnumbered the demon takes to the sky as the men lower their weapons watching it go into the dark sky. With the demons gone both Matius and Eva stand up nervously at the men approach them. “Are you okay?”, one of the men questions concerned as his friend follows behind. “I’m fine”, Eva states rubbing of any dirt from her clothes, “thanks for the save”. The man smiles to himself looking to Matius, “so…where you heading?”, the man questions. “We’re just heading to ……………….. cemetery, my father’s buried there”, Eva replies surprising the men. “Well be careful…”, the man replies, “there’s been a lot of shooting in that direction”. “Thank you”, Eva replies as both her and Matius pass the two men both looking at Matius.
They continue walking through the streets of London until they reach the cemetery, approaching the graveyard gates, looking as taunting as every. Eva cautiously presses her hand against the cold iron bars forcing them open gently, as she steps inside nervously. Matius follows closely behind, watching for any signs of movement. “Eva, keep an eye out for anything”, Matius states aware Eva is paying little notice to the surroundings. Eva gives a nod, immediately watching her surroundings in caution. They both walk through the cemetery steadily, going past several gravestones well worn with a cold breeze. Eva looks at the gravestones unsettled as she feels the cold breeze around her, breathing out puffs of air. Matius continues looking around the area in case of movement. Eva makes another step on the path accidentally crushing a stick. Panicked Eva suddenly steps back in alert. Irritated Matius puts his hand on her shoulder, “Just keep quiet”, Matius whispers assumingly. Eva turns gives a quick nod scared of Matius’s reaction, looking ahead scanning the gravestones.
They continue walking down the graveyard path passing a large tree, Eva’s eyes suddenly fix on a gravestone up ahead catching Matius’s attention. She runs off ahead approaching the grave, Matius following close behind. “This is it…where my father’s buried…”, she announces dropping respectfully to her knees. Matius approaches behind as Eva bows her head. “He was such a good father to me. It’s so hard to believe he died by one bullet, always there to help me. I just don’t understand why people would do this…”, she quickly faces Matius upset, “Why…why did he have to die? Why would someone just kill him?” . Matius pauses in thought looking upwards towards the moon. “Because I believe that in this world, people can be thoughtless in their actions. If you give someone a weapon or a gun, it’s like taking away someone’s innocence. People never think about consequences, the dangers of their actions…until it’s too late” Matius turns towards Eva, “Some however believe in taking gambles, taking risks. Getting what they want, even if it means someone pays the price”. Eva listening bows her head reaching into her pocket, taking out a white flower. Gently she rests it upon her father’s grave. Closing her eyes in pray, paying her respects.
The wind starts to howl, blowing the trees wildly their leaves rustling. Matius watches the area defensively, his expressions suddenly worrisome. “Something’s not right”, he shouts unsurely to Eva. “What do you mean?”, Eva questions turning towards him. “The wind it’s growing stronger…something’s coming. We need to go, now!”. Suddenly Matius spins around hearing moving soil, by one of the gravestones. The earth moves away as a rotting hand bursts from the grave mount. Then from one after grave mounds come of life as the dead come alive. “Eva we need to move NOW!”, Matius shouts already readying himself for an attack. As he says this Eva spins her head around, just as a rotting arm bursts through reaching towards her. She backs up screaming in panic before running towards Matius. “Let’s get out of her!”, Eva shouts as more undead rise from their graves finding new life in their limbs. They both run frantically through the graveyard, passing more undead, several already on the prowl as Matius wrestles one to the ground ending it’s short life. “What’s going on?” shouts Eva trying to keep up with Matius, “why is this happening?!”. “It’s the Spirits from hell!”, Matius blasts, “they’re taking over their bodies, bringing them back to life!”. Several more undead burst from their graves as both Eva and Matius run past them in panic, undead eyes watching in the shadows following their prey. “We must keep moving!”, Matius proclaims as more undead rise up from their soil graves, many with dirtied clothes . They continue walking continue running staying on the path, suddenly Matius’s path is blocked as an undead dressed in tattered clothes bursts in front of them, launching itself at them. In frustration lashes out at it, sending it flying into a gravestone remaining motionless. “We need to find the exit!”, Matius blasts, “There’s too many of them!”.
They both enter another area, getting closer to the exit. “Hey I recognise these grounds, we’re near the exit!”, Eva shouts in hope. Running down the path more udead are ahead blocking the path suddenly block their way, looking at them eagerly bearing their remaining teeth. Matius stops instantly cursing himself, quickly turns back the other way only to find they have been followed several undead glaring at them menacingly. In anger Matius fires his energy into some of the undead, knocking them back. Slowly the undead rise once more, looking at them in mockingly. Using to their advantage both Matius and Eva run past the undead running through several trees keeping very close, upahead they see the cemetery gates. “Look! There’s the exit!!”, Eva shouts increasing her speed. Several undead up ahead see both of them, charging at them . Matius punches one of the charging undead, knocking him into a large crowd of undead forcing them back. Eva runs ahead to the gates trying to push them open only to turn to Matius in desperation. “The gates, they’re locked!”, she shouts out shaking them in frustration. Matius knocks another undead back as the large crowd move closer towards both of them. Realising their numbers are too great Matius starts using his powers, keeping them at bay. “Looks like this is it!”, matius shouts out in desperation putting another undead down.
Just as they look finished one of the undead’s heads explodes, its body falling into a heap on the damp grass. Both Matius and Eva freeze in surprise, trying to figure out what just happened. Before they can think another shot is fired, as another undead’s head explodes collapsing to the grass.
“Hey I can’t keep this up all day”
Eva looks outside the metal gates seeing a man holding a shotgun, shooting through the gaps. He fires one more round before rushing to the gate, taking out some keys trying to find the right one. Matius seeing this with renewed hope starts using his powers on the oncoming undead, sending them flying. With their advance in disarray the man bursts open the gate. “Come on, quickly!!”, he bursts out ushering them out with his hand. Matius turns towards the man giving a nod, letting Eva go first as she runs towards the open gate. Just as an undead is about to attack her Matius quickly intervenes as it falls to the floor. Realising their enemy is escaping the remaining undead suddenly become urgent as they rush towards Matius. Matius knocks several back before running through the open gate as the undead charge. Quickly the man slams the gate shut, locking it as the undead slam against the metal gate. One undead hand bursts through the iron bars, reaching out frantically desperately reaching for life. Without hesitation the man lifts up his stfires the shotgun at the hand leaving nothing but a bloodied stump.
Out of the cemetery Eva breathes a sigh of relief as the man approaches her. “Thanks for your help”, Eva exclaims, relieved to escape that ordeal. “Oh it’s not a problem”, the man replies, first looking at Eva then looking at Matius in spite. “I know you”, the man speaks coldly, “you’ve been in the newspapers. You’re the one that’s caused panic in our streets!”. Matius lowers his head in shame. While Eva starts to get angry, “Hey! Why don’t you just back off?!” unable to control her emotions. The man slowly turns towards her shouting, “just what does he mean to you anyway?”. Immediatly Eva spins around, “He’s saved my life
