One Act Players

One Act Players

A Poem by Shane Rendon

Act one scene one
Boy meets girl

Remember?
I do.
Our lips first met
on a cold December after-noon
in a high school auditorium.
I could feel,
and I knew
something big was going to happen.
The warmth of your body,
the scent of your hair,
and your eyes
all spoke to me that day.
They told me this was true.

Act one scene two
Boy loves girl

Remember?
I do.
I laid on top of you,
and tried
to pull my lips away from yours,
because I wanted to say it.
I wanted to say
what we already knew.
“I love you”
Response
”And I love you”
A good night kiss,
and I was back home
thinking of nothing but you.

Act one scene three
Girl leaves boy

Remember?
I do
We knew from the start,
but I insisted
not to believe it.
Sitting in your drive-way
I couldn’t believe
you were leaving.

Act one scene four
Girl moves on

Remember?
I do.
You were only gone a month.
You rarely answered the phone.
My scent
was still fresh on your skin
when you found him.
You never even told me.
I found out on my own.

Act one scene five
Boy is alone

I cried…
and haven’t stopped yet.
