Rajamati

Rajamati

A Poem by Shairan
"

Rajamati is a beautiful girl from Kathmandu, Nepal described in a traditional Nepalese ballad. Kirti Laxmi, a Newar woman of Kirtipur, fought the invaders disguised as a man named Bhairav.

"
I am no Rajamati nor am I Kirti Laxmi,
I don't have eternal heavenly beauty with sparkling eyes.
My dull brown eyes don't shine under sun or any form of light.
My hair is not shiny black like the curtains of fine silk.
It is this dirty brown stubborn strands tangled like threads.

I have no strength nor the courage like a warrior princess.
My biggest enemy is  myself and my insecurity,
I don't battle huge army of foreign warriors,
I battle my own mind, my own thoughts.

No suitor to profess endless love to,
No crowd to praise my courage and selflessness.
I am hidden amid the crowd, forgotten and unimportant.
Like a pebble wishing to change into a gem.

I am no Rajamati nor am I Kirti Laxmi,
I am just me, an ordinary confused soul.
