Thoughtful Depression

Thoughtful Depression

A Poem by Shadowdragon

It begins as weariness.

A lingering fatigue that slowly encroaches on your being.

You don’t pay it any mind.

Your co-workers ask “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” You assure them. “I’m just a little tired.”

You stare at the book in your hands; your vision blurring as you try to comprehend its passages.

It soon finds its place next to similarly discarded amusements; it’s hard to focus.

You don’t pay it any mind.

Your friends ask “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” You assure them. “I’m just a little tired.”

Those around you are stifling; their voices boisterous and distracting.

It’s difficult to breathe; your thoughts seem difficult to process in the turbulence.

You don’t pay it any mind.

Your family asks “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” You assure them. “I’m just a little tired.”

You notice a certain numbness in your touch, a sensation of languor in your mind.

Your heart begins to sway, a skipped beat here and there.

You don’t pay it any mind.

Your love asks “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” You assure them. “I’m just a little tired.”

A great shadow descends; unfurling lacy wings as it settles in beside you.

Its bitter aura engulfs you, bringing with it a biting chill.

Soft velvet-lined fingers intertwine with your own, promising peace.

You can feel the skeletal form beneath them, promising serenity.

You don’t pay it any mind.

Your melancholy asks “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” You assure it.

“I’m just a little tired.”

We always hide the truth, don't know why. Maybe we think they won't understand or we fear showing weakness. Or maybe we're trying to convince ourselves. Well done here.
