Chapter nine - pastA Chapter by ShadowHaze
Alex lay limp in my arms; apparently she had no strength left to even move.
“So, what happened?” I asked, slowing down, so we were in the back of the group and no one would overhear us.
“My adopted sister happened.”
I looked at her, puzzled, “Your ad-“
“Yes, my adopted sister. She was evil beyond measures. I warned my parents, but they wouldn’t listen. They thought she was and angel sent from heaven, when really she was a demon from hell.” Alex took a deep breath, her eyes starting to brim with tears. “She thought it was funny that I was the only one that could see through her fake mask. She began to joke about it, mostly out in public. She started saying she would have to do something about me if I kept… If I kept calling her evil.” Alex stopped talking; breathing heavily, she closed her eyes, and didn’t continue. I thought it would be rude to interrupt her. After a bit she continued in a hoarse voice.
“You know my dad died in a car crash. That’s not the full story. When the doctors examined him, they found a single stab wound to the heart. He was then put in the car, and somehow the car went straight until it got near the intersection. Then the car crashed into another, and it was hit so hard, that both cars flipped and got five other cars.” The tears had begun leaking out of her closed eyes. “Everyone in the cars died, except one. My mom was in the car with my dad. That made her a vital suspect to the killing of my dad, but no one could prove it, because the doctors weren’t totally sure that it was a stab wound.” More tears had poured down her face. We had stopped at another fireplace, with benches, just like the one with the little girl named Heather.
“Sit down everyone.” Said the old man.
I walked over to the farthest corner, the one with the most shadows. I sat down and Alex sat beside me, resting her head on my shoulder. I wiped the tears off her face with my thumb, and she smiled slightly at me. She scooted closer to me, and I put my arm around her, stroking her back. She closed her eyes, and soon she was snoring softly. I grinned, and tried to listen to the old man.
“So, this ghost is the best ghost here. Happiest, best... Whatever you want to say about them. I swear they’re the happiest couple in history. No one knows why they haven’t moved on. Some people try to guess but they usually don’t get it right. Anyone here have an idea?”
Heather asked, “Cause they didn’t have a kid when they were alive.”
A soft voice in my ear made me jump, “Nope.”
Guessing it was the ghost that was supposed to be here, I said aloud, “No, that’s not it.”
“Ok… Anyone else?” No one else said anything.
The ghost laughed softly. “No?” it said in a hoarse voice. “Maybe because my wife murdered me, and then tried to make it up to me by killing herself, and I never forgave her. Never listened to her. Whatever about the “happiest ghosts here”.” He snorted.
The ghost then disappeared from beside me, and never came back. Everyone began to get up to go to the next section. I carefully picked up Alex without waking her, and followed them. She began muttering in her sleep, twisting in my arms to press her face into my chest. I caught two words of the mumbled sentences, “My Chris…” she twisted again in my arms, her face tilted towards mine. I stooped my head and kissed her forehead. Her skin was soft and warm. She didn’t wake up, and I felt a twinge of sorrow that she didn’t feel me kiss her. I sighed and then walked a little quicker to catch up with the group.
