Chapter Five - Present

 

She was still sobbing against my chest, her tears soaking my already wet shirt. “Shh… it’s ok… it’s ok… it’s over… Please… Please calm down,” I kept whispering to her, pleading, and worried that the mental shock, and emotional shock, that has hit her in the past five hours, might do permanent damage to her mind.

Soon, her sobs turned to dry hiccups. In that time, I had tried to go back the group had come, but invisible barriers blocked my way. I had to turn and go back the other way, racing as fast as I dared, with Alex in my arms.

“C-chris? Chris-christian?” Alex whispered. Her voice was muffled and tired.

I stopped walking immediately, “Yes?”

“Are you ok?” she asked.

I hesitated for a second, before responding, “Physically… Yes. Emotionally… I’m not totally sure.”

Alex twisted in my arms. “What do you mean by that?”

“I’m so worried about you. I’m worried, that something permanent might happen, marking you for life.”

Her eyes flashed, as if she was thinking of a question, that she could never ask. “I’ll be ok…” She said after a short pause.

I began walking again, deeper into the house. “Why are you walking this way? I thought you were taking us out!” said Alex, shocked.

“I can’t! It won’t let me. Like, invisible walls, or… Or barriers.” My voice sounded embarrassingly whiny.

Something shook Alex, and I looked down at her. I tilted my head to the side, confused. She shook again, and I realized she was laughing at me. “The-the last time I heard you whine like that was whenever we were in 3^rd grade, and I gave somebody else a part of my cookie, but not you!” She ended with a round of giggles, escaping her closed lips, which didn’t stay closed very long, when a round of out bursting laughter erupted from her. Her eyes where shining, and her perfect, white teeth gleamed in the small tendrils of moonlight, coming through the cracks in the old house.

I giggled once, but then just looked at her, cradled in my arms. I felt a smile cross my face, as she giggled herself into silence. She looked back, her eyes still shining. Her hand reached up to touch my cheek. Even though it was freezing cold, where her hand touched, heat rose quickly. I closed my eyes, and put the slightest pressure on her hand, by letting my head sag a little.

Her thumb stroked back and forth on my cheek. My eyes were still closed, as Alex sighed slightly, and let her hand drop onto my shoulder. I opened my eyes, and tilted my head towards her, until our foreheads touched. Alex’s sweet breath rushed faster against my face.

“I love you…” I whispered, and then jerked back up suddenly. Staring straight ahead, I saw the air waver as if heat waves rose from the ground.

“OH MY GOD!” I exclaimed, “What ELSE can happen????? Haven’t you tortured us ENOUGH?!?!”
