Chapter Four - PastA Chapter by ShadowHaze
We both got up at the same time, Alex held onto me, still sobbing. I lifted her head up, her face sparkling with tears. “Why are you crying?” I whispered softly to her.
“Because, you like me. Me out of all people… I don’t deserve you. At all,” more tears flowed out of her eyes, “You should like someone else besides me. I’ll just bring you down or… or something…” her voice trailed off.
I looked at her fiercely. “No, I don’t like you.” Her eyes had so much pain in them, and so many tears poured out onto her face, that I continued quickly, “No, I don’t like you, I… I love you. And only you.”
She gasped and then a new round of sobs erupted from her. “Now why are you crying?” I asked her, worried.
She looked up again, smiling this time, “Not because I’m sad, but because I’m happy.”
I smiled back, understanding and then looked up at the small group that was in front of them. They had stopped and formed a small semi-circle around a tiny bed.
It was the only thing in the undersized room they stood in. Alex slid away from my hold, and walked slowly, entranced, to the bed. She whispered, “Oh – my – God.” And fell sideways, her body hitting the floor with an odd hollow sound.
I stood there, stunned for a few minutes, before I rushed to her, kneeling down. “Alex?” I whispered, to shocked to speak any louder. “Alex?” I repeated.
She stirred slightly, but nothing else happened. “Alex? Please? Wake up…” my voice was still weak, as I started pleading. “Alex… Please, wake up, wake up…” My voice trailed off, as her eyelids fluttered.
“Alex!” I exclaimed, as her eyelids were flown open, and she started gasping, like something was choking her. I ran my hand over her neck, as if I could fight some invisible hand that was clutching her. Then, she was still. Deathly still.
“Alex?” I was whispering again. Her eyes opened again, and she seemed dazed. “Alex? Are you ok?”
She nodded slightly, stammering, “Yea, yea… I think so,” She got up quite steadily though. That surprised me, for I was prepared to catch her if she unexpectedly fell again.
“What happened?” I asked her, worried.
“Huh? Oh, nothing… There’s no ghost here either. I guess what the ghost hunters or whatever found was something they hoped was a “supernatural phenomenon”.” Her voice was much stronger then I had ever heard it before.
It seemed like she had a… Sense of leadership, or… Or power now around her. I looked in her eyes, and was shocked to see a defiant, cold, sharp look that was glanced back at me. What happened to her?? I asked myself. I was worried. But not for myself, but for whatever possessed Alex now. Whether it be one of the evil ghosts, or something more sinister, not caused by anything, except Alex’s evil side, I’ve never seen before.
What was going to happen to all the innocent people that were crowded around us? To her? To me? To us?
