Chapter One (past)

A Chapter by ShadowHaze

She was shivering with fear, and exhilaration was rippling through me, even though I hid it from her. I knew she was terrified. We walked into the old abandoned house, behind the group in front of us.
“Are you ok?” I asked her. She nodded, but didn’t speak. Without realizing it, she moved closer to me, seeking comfort. “Alex, are you sure you’re ok? We don’t have to do this.” We were going on our first ghost tour.
“No, I’m fine. I’m just sensitive to the super-natural stuff. Ya know what I mean,” She grinned momentarily. “This is what you want to do, so I’m coming. I’m not backing out.”
A feeling that I couldn’t determine, swept through me for her. She was such a great friend. We’d been best buddies since 2nd grade. We were both in 12th at the moment. It was Christmas break, and we decided that everyday, we would go out and do something new. We went shopping yesterday. I bought her a necklace there, for Christmas, when she wasn’t looking. I hoped it was nice enough for her.
As we got deeper into the house, the light began vanishing slowly. Alex shivered again, but, I could tell, not from the cold.
The person leading the group, told us to stop and sit down along the barely visible benches. He started to tell about what ghosts lived in this single house we were visiting. He said there were thirteen. He laughed, “Thirteen is always the bad luck number, eh?” I shivered this time, remembering with sudden regret, that it was Friday the 13th. Stupid me to pick this day.
“Chris?” Alex whispered.
“Yea?” I whispered back as the story-teller continued.
“I’m scared.”
I smiled warmly at her in the darkness. We were sitting side-by-side, on a bench to ourselves. She shivered again and scooted closer to me. I put one arm around her shoulders, and the other in front of her chest, holding her to me. She rested her head on my shoulder. “It’ll be ok. I’ll make sure nothing hurts you,”
She sighed, relieved I think, “Thank you. It means a lot to me.”
“Of course,” I said, resting my forehead on the top of her head for a few seconds before sitting up, and listening to the man.

Brilliant detail and formation of the plot. I've read other books on this site that I'm sorry to say have not really caught my interest, but yours has me captivated.
