Three-week Mantra

Three-week Mantra

A Poem by Sarah Rose
"

A written montage of my experience at cadet camp

"
 I'll soon forget
the qualities
of an ideal leader
and how few of them I have

even though
I was considered
an overachiever
who is above mistakes.
If they only knew . . .

I'll soon forget
the price
of a blue slushie
and the way it would be

watery one day
and hard as stone
the next day
but always
just what I needed

But I'll never forget
the mindless exhaustion,
looking forward to
those Wednesday nights of

dancing and shouting
till my voice broke, like when
I cried at graduation parade
for almost an hour
because I'll never be the same.

Singing old songs
with new friends,
our mingled voices
instilling hope into

those nights,
learning about each other
and ourselves,
repeating the three-week mantra:
"I'm going to miss you."

I liked this a lot, especially the last line. It's interesting to read this after you rambled to me about cadet camp in so many more words. This is really quite marvelous, the emotion is easy to feel and the word choice is outstanding, not that either of those is any surprise coming from your writing. Well done, Sarah.

I enjoy the cadence of the piece, and you truly feel it with the narrator. I love the Blue Slushie part, its what truly made me commiserate. I just graduated as well and i feel the digging in the heels of this piece, and the regret. It's very good :)

About
I'm not the best writer. Most of my pieces are scattered thoughts that I weaved together into something even a little bit comprehensible. My "forte" is poetry, although lately I've been boycotting rhy.. more..
