A Slice of AmericanaA Chapter by ShadowI remember the first time I saw him,I was sitting on the back on my uncle Davids truck while he loaded up on feed from the corner store.I wasn't looking my best to be sure,my hair was matted and soaking from sweating all day out in the field thank God I remembered to wear that sunblock.I had this horrible expression on my face from swallowing a bug earlier that I could still taste and I had twisted my ankle whhile walking across a gopher hole and David kept making jokes about the fact that I was hurt which made me dislike him all the more.I was certain that nothing in the world short of David saying I could take the rest of the day off to nurse my ankle would make me feel better, then i saw him.....Jason Diamond the first baseman for the High school Baseball team,he looked like he just stepped out of a Norman Rockwell painting his dirty faded jeans told the tale of hours of playing the game he loved, his tattered ballcap and mitt, weathered from whole days spent on the diamond, guarding the plate like a sentinel ready at a moments notice to do what he had to do to secure the win for his team.
He walked past flashing me that whiter than white smile of his perfect teeth curling his candy pink lips up around the corners and I felt like a complete and utter hag in my ripped denim overalls and my work boots but I tried to look as lady-like as possible in that moment.Which by the way only made me feel uglier,Jason and his friends walked inside the store and i immediately started cussing like a sailor for even thinking that he would take any interest in me,I mean what could I do for him other than help shine his cleets for games and do his laundry,my attention was focus so hard on cursing the day I was concieved that I didn't notice Jason walk back outside let alone the fact that he was staring at me while I was cursing eveything I knew......."Hey....you okay?" I suddenly looked up and I was staring into his bedroom brown eyes shining thru his thick sunkissed blonde locks swirled around his face.I couldn't say anything......"Your Tracy right?" God he knew my name and it never sounded half that good coming from anyone else.Yeah.....is all I could manage to squeak out."I've seen you around, your Carol's niece right?I giggled at the thought that he had seen me and knew who I was,and then I realized...I don't giggle for any reason what the hell just happened and before I could finish the thought Jason was reaching up for my face and brushing the hair out of my eyes I never understood the expression"My heart stopped" until that moment.
Acting Coy was never my strong suit,Jason invited me to watch the game that was planned for the Fourth of July it was the only night game that they played since the fireworks lit up the night sky like an artifical sun and the bathed the field in an array of colors that I can't even begin to describe
