A Reflective Verse for Hip Hop

A Reflective Verse for Hip Hop

A Poem by Shadow

I remember back to the days of KRS One
back before every body was rhyming about killing someone
Hip Hop was about sending a message
not about being obsessed with ones own visage

I never quite know what to say when someone
asks me why I smile when I hear "Hip Hop Hooray"
I tell them cause I like the beat
but that's just what moves my feet

The real reason is that the song has no violent undertone
no hidden message which is why you can't get it as a Ringtone
the positive messages are swept away
Giving room only for the hateful nature that Gangsta rap displays

Gangsta Rap?
who decided that they could rap anyway
all you ever hear them discuss is how the white man is going to take them away
if you weren't doing anything wrong you'd have nothing to fear
in these days and times a positive message is what we need to hear

Last time I checked all the real "Gangsters" were dead or in jail
A testament to the fact that evil never truly prevails
Those that survive are under constant surviellance
never allowed to contact there family or friends
forced to rely for the first time on only their talents

I find myself constantly waiting for the next great messiah
of Hip Hop to make himself known
to share his story
to write that one great song that restores Hip Hops lost glory.
