If love was all, I'd be the wall,
That stops the storm that hits your shore.
I'd let no trouble reach your door.
I'd block the pain that comes your way,
And in my shade, you'll safely stay.
Each time you stumble, grab this wall,
I'll see to it, you will not fall.
If love was all...
I'd be the tree with branches spread,
No rain or snow would touch your head.
The winds of sorrow, sleets of pain,
Would never touch your life again.
Should trouble come, give me a call,
And in my arms you will not fall.
If love was all...
Your sorrow and your tears, I'll buy,
And everything that makes you cry.
And in exchange, with you would be,
All smiles and laughter, life gave me.
The joys I have, please take them all,
The days you live should be a ball.
If love was all...
I'm usually not very wild about love poems, becuz they all sound the same with common clichés . . . that being said, this is the rare delightful surprise! I love this message! It's so original & lyrical & imaginative. I love the way the narrator conveys such confidence & protection, which is so hard to find in my experience. So often, people write about love and it's all about "self" -- what the beloved makes the narrator feel. But I love that your message is mainly about the other person, what the narrator would do to be a good loving friend & companion. I also love the analogies you chose (wall & tree) -- it's great the way you carried the imagery thru each of the stanzas with clarity & consistency. This is one of the best poems of yours that I've read so far.

Barleygirl, thank you for your very encouraging words
The wish to see them never harmed - that you would sacrifice yourself for their unending happiness - 'Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friend' - came to mind.
I really like how you employed the refrain so skillfully making for a smooth transition through the piece.
Another superb write Shabeeh

Thank you Anindita. I'm glad you found the shine in this poem.
When we learn that we can love unconditionally, selflessly, without fearing that a loss can tear us apart, we know that we have the true heart to love. Otherwise, as we love and watch out to keep our love safe, we end up losing the love itself.

Your words of commitment, and devotion are those that give cause for one to believe in the power of love; and in perfect form!
Yes, if love was all...!
If love was all indeed... This is more than just a poem... It is a tribute to your love and to the person it is intended for... They must be very special. Your rhythm and meter are spot on. The emotional content of this is so expressive and beautifully expressed... That is one lucky person... I am blessed with having a love like this myself... Going on 8 years... I really enjoyed this.

Writing poetry is my passion. I have been writing since I was 10 years of age. I love the poets of the Romantic Era and am very particular about rhyme, meter and balance.
