Movement Anthem

Movement Anthem

A Poem by Sgammato [Inertia The Musical]
"

Summer, Peter, and Anthony have all engaged in Free Thought. The Philosopher appears and encourages them to make a Movement. Anthony is reluctant, but eventually is inspired to join.

"
Movement Anthem

PHILOSOPHER:
You’re hopeless and bleak
You’ve reason to be,
But to give up is to give in to what they want!
We can’t let them succeed.

We want to be free
don’t you agree?
Can’t let them take all our rights away!
Our hope is all we have

ANTHONY:
Have you not seen the limited pool you fish from?
And how do you think you’ll reel them in?
Your bait is wholesome but your audience is indifferent.
You can’t make them want what they don’t believe is lost.

It’s hopeless. Hopeless! Hopeless! (makes as if to walk away)

PETER [Spoken]:
Just wait one second, OK? You know,
Our task may be taxing,
but to sit here relaxing
while T.H.E.Y. carve out our future is wrong.

Our numbers may be lacking,
but enough to impact
things stands next to you now.
The odds keep stacking,
but soon T.H.E.Y. will be retracting
their lies.

ANTHONY: Hah! You think it’s that easy. So naïve!

PETER: Even if we’re outnumbered, there’s still a chance!

ANTHONY: You’ll wage war with a ragtag platoon of idealists against legions of
realists, only to be met with crushing defeat.

SUMMER:
With spears, rods and line and nets, we must fish for minds
Spirit fierceness will reel them in
Words don’t get in the way when you watch someone’s eyes
feel it, congeal it and seal the deal

Scoop them from their
fishbowl falsehoods,
Make a Movement,
then we all could
Learn to feel human again!

This world is in need of a great many things
You’re not the only one who is praying for change
Let’s make a Movement

Together we’ll succeed, so let gravity
Pull you close to something that’s greater than yourself
Sapere Aude

ANTHONY:
Heard this before
Sang this haunting tune before
Never heard the end

Resolution ignored
Not what I was hoping for
How’s this different now?

PHILOSOPHER:
A great betrayal you bore
From this country you adore
Now you’re bitterly scarred

Let your conscience explore
The consequence of closing the door
Let the Movement encourage and restore your faith
We are the difference now!

PHILOSOPHER, PETER, SUMMER:
This world is in need of a great many things
You’re not the only one who is praying for change
Let's make a movement

PHILOSOPHER, PETER, SUMMER, ANTHONY:
Together we'll succeed, so let gravity
Pull you close to something that’s greater than yourself
Sapere Aude

United we’re free, so let gravity
Pull you close to something that’s greater than yourself
This Movement won’t be still
