English Man's English (Verb Controversy)

English Man's English (Verb Controversy)

A Poem by Seyi Ojenike

Every time I speak the english man's english
I must say, I always feel feverish
He says it is ran
And not runned
Yet comes back saying gunned
Forgetting it should be gan

What is it with the english man's english,
That it is so english?
I am very sure he says grew
As past tense for grow
But never have I heard him say gew
As past for go

The english man's english is really
Something else
To understand I think I need
Magic spells

I sometimes think I know it already
When he says shook
For past tense of shake
But I get back to square one
When he says baked
As past tense for bake
Instead of book

When he says fight
He calls it's past fought
But when he says bright
He never says brought

Puzzled about this English man's english
With it's wide reach
I sit to wonder
What it is
These schools teach?
