Masqueraded Love

Masqueraded Love

A Poem by Katy D.
"

I wrote this a long time ago. I'm half-tempted to change it but I think I'll just keep it the way it was originally. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

"

You see that couple over there?

They're making out and I don't care

Foolishness is all I see

Two bored preppies pretending to be

Happy and unquestioningly

In love but they're only fifteen

Simple Freshman thinking they're so cool

They can do anything now that they're in high school

But haven't they learned that love isn't real

Only an emotion a lonely soul wishes to feel

And haven't they learned that love can fail?

It's only true in the fairy tales

So they think their love will never end?

If they do I feel sorry for them

Another two young strangers have fallen victim

To a masqueraded love when they should only be friends

I like it. I wouldn't change it. It's kind of a downer, but poetry that explored the melancholy, the desperate, and the disparaged aspects of love and life are usually very powerful.
