Chapter 12: On the run

"Whats the big idea Seth? Waking everyone up in the middle of the night?" Jays questions feel like a branding iron burning into my chest.
"We have to leave Jay, right now." I say trying to keep my fear under control, though I am hardly successful.
"Why? Why would we uproot everyone right now when we don't even know whats out there?"
I draw a breath before answering because I know that no one will likely believe me.
"Because whatever it is out there, is in the den."
"Oh great this again." One of the dragons huffs.
"Let him speak." Neil shouts before the others can join in. His energy bursts in my mind, it's iridescent blue bouncing of the walls, revealing the silhouettes of the other dragons.
"Why?" They ask, "He'll just spew more nonsense  about ghosts and ghouls."
"I believe him." Neil says, and his energy pulses again.
"Settle down everyone." Jays voice cuts through, dimming Neil's light and bringing the room back into darkness.
"Jay, the ghosts are coming, it's just like last time, it starts with the humming." I say just as a loud bang fills the room.
I turn to see a glowing amber form licking its hooked beak. I slap both of my hands over my mouth to keep from screaming. The solemn ghost steps over the crumpled silhouette of a dragon and moves towards me.
"Everyone move." I hear Jay call out. But it quickly fades into white noise until all that is left is me and the solemn ghost. I am frozen with fear, my feet cemented to the floor. As it walks towards me I can see green flashing through it, the auras of other dragons. Soon we are face to face, I can feel its cold breath across my skin. We stand like that for several moments neither of us intending to change it. It opens its mouth and I'm sure I will be its next meal, but it does not make to tear the flesh from my face, instead it starts to moan. Its sound fills me with sorrow, yet I know not what it is saying.
"Move numb skull." Clair's voice wakes me from my stupor and I rush around the Solemn without once turning to see if it followed.

"Were will we go?" I ask Jay
"I know a place." He says and continues to walk. "For tonight however we need to find higher ground."
"Higher ground?"
"Yes. When Joshua was trying to find out what happened he noticed something. All of the bodies were found at similar heights, as if whatever is out there could only survive until a certain altitude."
"I see." I say, my disheartened tone matching the other dragons, many of which had not been outside since the disaster.
"We will take refuge up in the CN Tower, I hope you don't mind stairs." Jay says as we cross over the remains of what must have been a busy street. Constantly I bump into the side of cars, only to the enjoyment of the others.
Suddenly I notice something at the edge of the darkness. I jump, afraid that it is another solemn ghost, but as I take the time to focus on it, its white light takes on the shape of a girl.
"What's wrong Seth?" Neil asks. But I don't answer, instead I run towards her, the only light in the darkness.
"Seth wait!" Neil shouts out. "What are you doing?"
"Probably something stupid" I can hear Clair say. "Come on, lets make sure twinkle toes doesn't kill himself."

i think this is a really lovely follow up to the last chapter, but there are a couple little grammatical things here and there. Other than that, the words are really well chosen throughout and once again youve managed to pull me into the story :)
