I Woke Up

When dreams become nightmares..

I woke up last night panting
Not once, not twice, but thrice
Because of a dream so real and vivid
My entire psyche became livid

I woke up last night crying.
The thoughts that haunt me have gotten stronger
I don't know if I can fight much longer
They have penetrated my last defense

I woke up last night failing.
It was a nightmare like no other
It exploited my hidden weakness
Leaving me left in pure bleakness

I woke up last night dying.
It ended with me talking to Death
Then everything went frigid and nothing was left
I was stuck in the dream; I couldn't breathe, move, nor see

One might think that waking up would be a blessing
But it's not, for I have taken heed to the ending.

This is just something I wrote a couple days ago, it seemed fitting at the time.

I have a nightmare where it starts with me waking up - which is really confusing because it takes a while to realize that I didn't really wake up, it's just part of the dream.

I like the irregular rhyming scheme that changes between stanzas - makes it feel more fluid and less like couplets :)

Thank you :) the dream I actually had was so strange. The one I'm describing in the poem was actually the third one. But the strangest part was in my first dream, I guess I fell asleep and actually had a nightmare within that dream. And then that dream also became a nightmare. And then I finally woke up. Then I fell back asleep and had the dream that I wrote about. I thought it'd be hard to describe a nightmare within a nightmare haha. But I'm glad you like the rhyme scheme, I thought it was different :)
